I seriously needs someone's advice. I want to buy an apple ipad2 or 3 directly from apple australia or apple usa. But the thing is is it possible for me to do that. And would I have to pay extra for unlocking it in south africa. Is it even lock? And how much would it be to unlock it if it is locked.

why do you want to purchase from abroad?

you realise that you need to add vat and duties to your purchase and shipping cost?

also you will have no local warranty?
 
The new iPad shouldn't be networked locked at all, but the local date for release is the 27th of April... Not a long wait at all.

Unless you are planning on not declaring it ;) However be warned that I have heard they do not honour warranties locally if you cannot prove you have paid customs duties. Not sure how true it is, or if they will even honour warranty at all.

The iPad will not be network locked from overseas, so it will work anywhere.
 
Be a good citizen and buy an Ipad2 locally. Ipad3 only offers better screen in SA AFAIK the other big feature LTE is irrelevant here.
Other than that I cannot see a reason to pay extra for Ipad3. Screen of Ipad2 is good enough.
 
Surely LTE isn't irrelevant? Surely the new IPad will be able to make use of the 21Mbps networks we have here?
 
Nevermind LTE, that retina display alone is worth the price of admission. Considering that as long as you using the thing you LOOKING at it how can a major screen upgrade not be considered massive?? I don't get it. Add to that the improved camera, twice the ram, the A5X chip, software improvements and you've got a very competent and significant upgrade.
 
There still is issues wrt the Ipad3. (wifi issues, LTE etc) - keep in mind the first version of anything new is bound to have problems.

Better wait it out.

Or, if you *really* must have an Ipad, get the Ipad2.
 
Why not spend R2000+ on a second hand iPad2?

@GarethC Yes, LTE is irrelevant everywhere except the USA and Canada, and it is far from certain if, when we do get LTE in this country one day, it will be on the frequencies the iPad 3 supports at the moment. Look at the trouble Apple has gotten into in Australia, f'r example.

The 3 is NO faster than the 2. All that extra chip and battery is used to power the screen. It does have a better camera.

I bought an iPad2 the other day and I don't regret it. My 50+ year old eyes don't see separate pixels on it, and I used the money I saved to get some great accessories. But I already struggled to find one. Hold on for two weeks and buy the 3. Or go 2nd-hand and really save some money as Hemps suggests.

If a new iPad 2 16gb wifi retails for R3999 what can one expect to pay for a 2nd hand one? R2.5k-R3k? Damn good value if you ask me. I just sold a one year old, heavily used iPad 2 16gb wifi for R3k. Had it on Gumtree for less than a day and had about 5 calls for it...
 
Just wait a month and buy it locally ,if budget isn't an issue.
Otherwise just get an iPad 2.The prices of these will surely drop when the 3 is readily available.
 
The difference doesn't IMO justify the price; I still think the iPad 2 is great (most definitely the price).
This btw should surprise some people (especially, those that think I'm such a fanboy)

The screen on the iPad3
IMO not so much of a fundamental change as was the iPhone 3 to iPhone 4 retina display -- so not a sure bet.

The GPU improvement
Not fundamentally noticeable change

The back camera
Very much for me is a waste; I much rather would have preferred a high res front camera for Skype, FaceTime.

Weight
It's heavier, you finally get used to it, but feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Thicker
Yes it's thicker than the iPad 2, also feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Heat
The new GPU puts out more heat, so heavier on battery, and subtlety less comfortable for games.

Apps
Not enough exclusive apps.

Summary
I say wait for the the 4th iPad, or buy the cheaper one...

FYI, I've had the 3rd iPad for just over a month and still have my iPad 2.

Note: even though I can be honest about less than ideal new kit from Apple, doesn't mean tomorrow I'll be using Windows; that's a stretch too far ;) :whistle:

Oh I'd also suggest you buy local, the prices are not that high compared to international markets, unless of course you claim the tax back :D, and don't declare :whistle:

Warranties are international, they can't refuse; they receive funds to service Apple goods in this territory; a simple challenge is all that is needed (all my mobile kit; iPhone, iPad, is bought abroad, and serviced locally) -- i.e. they don't carry servicing off the margins.

Really? Did you pay duties? I've never had a warranty claim luckily and buy most of my iDevices overseas.

Internationally all warranties are serviced without debate I.e. serial number is only used to determine warranty, yes it shows other things -- but on what basis could they refuse; you're legally not allowed to buy "chocolate" when you go overseas, do they confiscate it at customs -- crap.

Core uses those excuses to scare people into buying locally; as an authorized service centre they have obligations. What do think happens when you have a reverse scenario, you bought an iPad from core and travel to France; do you think they refuse to help you?

It's not as if you're taking a rotten Nestle bar to Cadbury. ;)

Btw let's keep warranties and declaration separate (one is a personal matter) :whistle:

Technically they (Apple) can if the warranty itself is anything to go by.

Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the hardware product.
But in my experience they never have.
