iPads at iGear

I will never buy anything again from iGear.

I emailed iGear (Nicole van Vuuren) 6 weeks ago. Her reply not only threatened me with legal action but someone from iGear's office had the audacity to call me several days later, disguising their voice (female caller) as being a Customs officer from the Cape Town Post Office. She said a package had arrived for me and inquiring if going to pay VAT and duty!? As a registered member of iGear, they would have my cell number on file.

I had emailed her regarding, what I call tarnishing of Apple's name given their blatant fleecing of the SA (Apple) consumer by a 100% retail markup for US iTunes Gift Cards.

A 100% SA Rand increase is bad enough but 100% US Dollar markup something else. Listed as a "best seller" on their site, a $50.00 card retails for R750.00 - at the time $103.00. You can purchase the identical product online from the US with a 10% markup here: http://itunes-giftcards.com

What really annoys me is that iGear fail to realize forget that owning and enjoying a US iTunes account outside of America is not a right, rather its a privilege Apple have extended their loyal customers worldwide. Apple could easily with the "flick of a switch" block country access (IP address) for abuse to their US Store. iGear will argue their price includes VAT and duty. If that is the case, where is the actual card? Like the US company (above) iGear will email you the respective code - you never get the card.

From a sales and marketing perspective there can be no better vehicle than these Gift Cards for driving customers at your SA iPhone / iPod / iPad site - but at a 100% markup? Other than to fleece you, they certainly don't have your best interests at heart.

UPDATE
I received the following reply (08/05/2010) from Par Wannman US supplier (above URL) of US iTunes Cards:

"Wow, that's an incredible markup.....
Generally speaking there is no VAT on prepaid cards, as they are not a product but a payment form. I sell these cards worldwide and have never heard of a VAT charge for them. If that is the case in SA (which i doubt), then you as the buyer should pay VAT for using a debit card also....."

True, it's like buying a GIFT voucher at Amazon or CNA or a Traveller's Cheque.

We shouldn't support people like iGear. It's unadulterated profiteering. Just as bad as our friendly local Apple distributor.
Exactly ...

I have had a bad experience with iGear. Wait until someone else gets them ;)
Me too... Un-truths as well ...

Your friend could just have shipped it directly to you - why use MyUS?
Because I already had a MyUS account, because you can get cheaper rates going through MyUS than directly to FedEx or DHL, because friends sometimes don't go to the hassle of packing stuff properly, whereas MyUS does! MyUS knows their stuff --> how to ship freight!!!

Okey-dokey. If cost is an issue USPS Express Mail International is insured and significantly cheaper than any rate MyUS gets (I've seen their rates) and clearance fees are R100 less too. They take 1-2 days max longer than FedEx/DHL though. I've just had MyUS ship 13 pounds of medical books to me and it's not cheap.

i have never purchased anything from iGear, and after hearing so many horror stories from people who have, I never will. It's been hard to find many people who have had a good experience with them :erm:

Profit margins that these folks put up - totally silly - enough to justify you flying across yourself and just buying one and returning home.

Some silly phone shop in sandton next to totalsports and close to the fountain court - has the wifi only 32gb going at R10500.00 and the 64gb at R12500.00

iGear are full of it.

Their listing for the iTunes cards tries to justify the price by saying that they have to pay sales tax on the cards when they buy them from the iStore in the US. That is a blatant lie - no state sales tax is charged on gift cards in the US.

Ive also had Nicole from iGear screaming down my ear for daring to report their bad service on Hello Peter, calling me a liar etc, that woman is not well I tell you!! Dont deal with these shysters, or at least have a look at Hello Peter before you do, forewarned is forearmed etc...

I'm getting my wife the 64Gb 3G iPad when we head to Australia next month on holiday. Costing me R6500 vs the R10 - R12k the locals are charging in SA.

Yes be careful when buying from them. I think this is how they work - they deliver small stuff and when you order big items, all hell breaks loose. Ordered a iphone G4 from them. We had to pay via EFT. Item has not arrived since April. Nicole and her side-kick Kerry send you harassing emails and ask you to do a post office search for yourself, although the tracking number belongs to a courier company. When asked for proof of tracking numbers they simply ignore you. They refuse to refund you the money or send a new item. You are subjected to an investigation into an item which according to them is not lost and you must just wait until they find it!. We reported them to the Consumer Protection Commission - after which Nicole told us not to threaten them. We phoned them today as well and Nicole had a screaming fit over the telephone as soon as we mentioned from where we phoned. She screamed and shouted and put the phone down. Subsequently she then responded to an email where we quoted her page 162 of the Consumer Protection Act which points out Administrative Fines. Once again, she makes out as if she is fully conversant in the Protection Act. The Complaints Unit told us in writing that it would take 6 weeks to resolve this dispute, but Nicole knows it takes 8 months. This makes you think that she must have been investigated by some body before or not? We suggest you file a complaint the Complaints Handling Unit at [email protected].

That was posted a year ago. :)

OOPS!

%)*(*@#$*()* necro posts! :D :p

I was just going to add that if they were looking at buying an iPad2 in Oz they might have issues as well, I tried to get my aunt to bring one over earlier in the year and they were sold out too.
