Interesting...

MacBook Air M1 base model - $999 - SA pricing = R19 999

iPhone 12 pro - $999 - SA pricing = R23 499

R3500 difference between 2 products that are the same price and the iPhones are being imported now at an even more favorable exchange rate.

I expected 30K for the Pro and Max, quite surprised. An iPhone 12 Pro contract should be cheaper than a Note 20 Ultra by the looks of it.

I'd rather spent my kfc-money here:

They're ripping off us apple users because they can. Eventhe R20k for a $999 Macbook Air is too much! Now they wanna charge even more than 20x for $ - > R

Smartphones are taxed differently than laptops. There's a 15% 'luxury tax' on smartphones.

Are you sure? I imported a smartphone couple months ago and only paid the 15% VAT, plus the customs clearance obviously

I bought an M1 MacBook Air at iStore the other day and asked about pricing and the manager told me this. She also said that Apple determines pricing, not Core.

I'm no tax expert but a luxury tax could explain the difference. Here's an article:

Lol back from 2012:

For those interested in getting an iPhone 5 without a monthly contract, iStore advertises the 16GB model for R8,299

Did they have stock of the MBA or did you have to pre-order it?

No fingerprint reader

None of the new phones have that. I've been using the iPhone X for just over 2 yrs now - also doesn't have it and I have not missed it one bit. FaceID is just better for my use case.
