iPhone 13 discussions

Battery performance is seriously impressive on the 13 Pro Max

I've charged it once since I got it yesterday morning (and that wasnt even to 100%), 10 hours activity (7 hours screen on time - most of that is youtube), and still at 50%.

My XS with 80% Maximum Capacity would need at least a full charge per day.
On that note, I see that the replacement battery cost from Apple is really not too bad (R899), so will be doing that before my wife gets the XS (to upgrade her/my old 6S)

So I've decided to come over to the dark side, and mostly convinced the wife to do the same. I've researched the living crap out of Apple and the iPhone for the last few weeks, and I'll be pulling the trigger on a 13 Pro (Graphite 256GB) when my upgrade comes round in a couple of months.

The transfer from Samsung to iPhone seems (mostly) seamless, but my only concern is moving my WhatsApp chat history across. It doesn't seem to be a standard process, and I have a couple of conversations that I simply can NOT lose. Any advice?

Apparently Facebook is working on a way to restore backups from other platforms, when that’s happening who knows.

I’ve only seen paid solutions, you looking at upwards of $20, but it is apparently possible.

I was one of those that used WhatsApp so seldom that what few conversations there were I didn’t care about so my Google was like 5 minuets and I wasn’t going to pay. Deleted it a few months later anyway.

I guess seeing as it’s a few months away you can wait and see what Facebook does.

I really want an iPhone which is odd for me as I'm a huge Android fanboy. If money wasn't an issue I'd buy the 13 Pro Max

Will a US purchased iPhone work in South-Africa? I see there's a huge price difference between SA pricing and US pricing on iPhone 13 Pro

If you or someone you know are flying over you will save money, if not it will end up costing you more.

As a luxury item SARS imposes 3 compounded taxes on it of 7, 15 and 7%.

I did the math a week before our preorders opened and the Pro 256GB worked out to 32k ex shipping, vs the 24k you’d pay here.

Depending on who ships it and how big the box is you looking at anywhere between R5000 and R2000 for shipping.

After having every Samsung Galaxy device from the S2 i sold my S21+ and made the switch about 3 months ago to the iPhone 12 pro (256GB). I knew the 13 was just around the corner but i knew the differences would be that great so took the 12 which i got at a good price.

With regards to WhatsApp, i paid $20 for some software which handled the transfer for me. Since then though, WhatsApp have introduced the feature to move chats between android and iOS as well as the other way around.

It may be just for beta users but give it a look

MTN delievered my Pro Max yesterday and and mentioned before its quite a beast. I'm upgrading from an XS Max and even though the screen size is more or less the same the phone feels heftier, probably the extra weight and its a little thicker. so far i am super chuffed the high refresh rate screen is amazing!

I wanted to ask, has anyone been able to test the 5G on it? does it even support our networks? i saw MTN bragged about being the first to support 5G on the 12 but i am not sure about the 13.

Vodacom supposedly supports 5G on the 12 and up, but I don't have 5G coverage where I live, so I leave it on 4G.

iPhone X outfitted with working USB-C port in spectacular DIY project

Just because Apple refuses to make the switch to USB-C on its phones doesn’t mean all users are left despaired. Enter Ken Pillonel - a Master’s degree student of robotics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) who single-handedly converted a regular Lightning-equipped iPhone X into the first Apple smartphone with a USB-C port. He did so after a few months of work and recently shared the final working product in a YouTube Shorts video on his channel.

The video shows the phone with its modified charging port which manages to recognize a MacBook USB-C charger as a power source and also handles data transfer when connected to the laptop. The marvelous feat required reverse-engineering Apple’s C94 connector which allowed Pillonel to create a custom PCB with a female USB-C port.

Apple cuts iPhone 13 production estimates due to chip shortage

The ongoing chip crisis is apparently now big enough to even reach Apple - and this time we're not talking about smartwatches, but the company's main cash cow, the iPhone.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is likely to slash its projected production targets for the iPhone 13 family for 2021 by as many as 10 million units. This is happening because of prolonged chip shortages, which are now impacting the company's most recent flagship smartphone line, according to "people with knowledge of the matter".

Apple initially expected to make 90 million units of the various iPhone 13 family models by the end of the year, but now it will have to cut that projection back to around 80 million.

That number is lower in part because Broadcom and Texas Instruments (TI) apparently can't deliver enough components in time. Apple buys some display chip parts from TI, while Broadcom is a longtime supplier of various wireless components. The main issue with TI has to do with a chip that powers the OLED display, but Apple is also facing component shortages from other suppliers.

Cheers for that. Strangely, it's possible to transfer the chats from iPhone to Samsung (not other Android phones), but not the other way around (yet). Hopefully that gets worked out within the next couple of months.

Well damn. Popped into the local O2 (UK carrier) to check out the phones in the flesh, and I'm now leaning towards the Pro Max. The Pro seems slightly smaller than my S10, I guess cause of the thick bezel, but the Max just seems so much nicer all round. The notch on the Max looks smaller because of the bigger screen, too, and I was actually surprised because the phone isn't as obscenely big as I'd always expected it to be.

Voda probably has stock somewhere, tried calling all the stores?
It does look like they have stock but by the looks of it, Cellucity can’t get the phone from Vodacom even though I applied for a Vodacom contract via Cellucity. If you’re wondering why I didn’t apply with Vodacom directly, the pre order process kept failing for me.

Cancel with Cellucity and just go to Vodacom? I've done something similar before
