iPhone 3G data consumption

If i leave my internet on on my 3Gs and put all notifications off will it still consume data and chow my airtime? If so is there a way to ensure that data is only used when i open an app like facebook etc?
 
I know this problem well. It's due to an issue with the way your iPhone was activated for Push Notifications. If your iPhone is unlocked, and hacktivated, you have this issue. It's due to the iPhone continuously checking for the correct certificate. If possible get the original SIM card from the country it came from, and activate with that.

Another fix is to get samprefs on Cydia.
