The most significant changes have taken place within the hardware of the device. The ‘S’ in the phone’s title represents ‘speed’ owing to the fact that Apple has supercharged the CPU.

In the original iPhone, and the subsequently released iPhone 3G, tech fans found an attractive, stylish and technologically sound device which arguably revolutionised the touch screen market.

Despite all of its positive attributes and its massive popularity the iPhone 3G was met with some criticism owing to the fact that it was missing a number of important smartphone features such as MMS support, video recording, Bluetooth and copy and paste functionality.

In response Apple has released the iPhone 3GS which addresses many of these complaints, while retaining the style that has made the franchise so popular.

Physically there is almost no difference between the iPhone 3G and the 3GS apart from mirrored lettering on the back. The mute switch, casing, dimensions, home and power buttons have all remained exactly the same as its predecessor.

The most significant changes have taken place within the hardware of the device. The ‘S’ in the phone’s title represents ‘speed’ owing to the fact that Apple has supercharged the CPU of the 3G from roughly 412MHz to a rumoured 600MHz, with the RAM doubling from 128MB to 256MB.

The difference is obvious as soon as the 3GS is switched on. It is more responsive than its predecessor, especially when opening applications and scrolling through the interface.

Apple also opted for an updated graphics processor in the 3GS, known as the PowerVR SGX. This contributes to faster app load times and better performance in power hungry apps.

The 3GS also features a considerable jump in capacity from the previously available 8GB and 16GB 3G versions. Users can now choose between 16GB and 32GB storage capacity, a nice addition for those who regard their iPhone as both a communication device and a media player.

Both the iPhone and the iPhone 3G received negative reviews for featuring cameras of only 2 megapixels without autofocus or a flash. Apple has responded by bumping the camera up to 3 megapixels with an autofocus function. Although the camera performs better, it still fails to match up to other phones in the same price bracket.

What is arguably the most significant feature in the iPhone 3GS is the addition of the new iPhone OS 3.0 software. It fixes almost all of the bugs found in previous versions with a number of additional features. These include the welcome addition of cut, copy and paste functions; push notifications for application related notices, video recording and editing and voice control.

The updated OS also features a number of new apps such as compass integration with Google maps and a landscape keyboard.

The iPhone 3GS is still exclusive to the Vodacom network although the price of the device has improved significantly from the iPhone 3G. A 32GB version is available on an iPhone Weekender S package with a once off payment of R5 199 and fully financed options are available from R458 per month.
