so im not to clued up on the whole jailbreaking thing - but can an iphone 4 with 4.0.2 as its original os be jailbroken??

just upgrade to 4.1 and Jailbreak using Limera1n

i was under the impression the 4.0.2(known as 4.2) is the one after 4.0.1(known as 4.1)...so how do you upgrade that?

Yes. Place it under the back wheel of car. Get in car. Put car in reverse. Drive a meter backwards. Get out. Phone Samsung and get a Galaxy S... and voila.

Sorry, after playing with the Galaxy S, itself and Android are no match for iPhone & iOS.

I'll accept than in a few months/years, Android might take over.

/ignores stricken and continues

ok can i simplify things abit here ---

under settings -> general -> about -> version 4.0.2

Son 4.0.2 doesn't mean 4.2
Do yourself a favour and google 4.1 firmware update and download it....
Do not update via Itunes as that will upadte your phone to 4.2 which cant be Jailbroken

Tethered or untethered?

You probably would need to JB it every time you reboot (I've never had to reboot, but still).

Not too sure mate....just forwarding the info....as i dont have an iPhone anymore but instead an iPad

Cool. :)

But ya, I think it's still such that you'd need to JB on every reboot. So most are still waiting. ;)

Agreed, download the ipsw file for 4.1 for your device, do not use itunesto update as stated before. In itunes click on update while holding shift and point the browser to the ipsw file that you have downloaded. This will update your device to 4.1. Then simply download limerain and the jailbreak literally takes two minutes to complete.

Please note that it is currently possible to jailbreak 4.2.1, but you will need to have saved ssh blobs from 4.2. So until the greenpois0n jailbreak for 4.2.1 is released I would say that 4.1 is still the way to go.

I just wanna mention that you can only do this if you saved the SHSH's for 4.1.

I don't know about that, the only thing with 4.2.1 jailbreak is it's a tethered jailbreak, which means every time you reboot your phone you have to re-jailbreak.
