i just got my iphone 4 today :p
i managed to get the salesman not to activate my iphone & said i would do it myself :D

Just want to know what i should do now?
im affraid of using Itunes normally in case it changes my baseband and wont be able to jailbreak & unlock.
Apple is getting very clever these days

its MTN btw
P.S im being caucious because my iphone3G has been sitting in my cupboard because of updating

Please help asap im dying to use my new phone

Just don't update to 4.2 yet if you want to Jailbreak it. I am on 4.1 with the 02.10.04 firmware (baseband) and my iPhone is jailbroken. From what I understand the baseband is only important if you want to unlock your phone, like bex.cpt said though, our phones are not locked to a specific network.

You will have to plug it into iTunes if you want to start using it, when the update message pops up just click "NO".

Enjoy.

There is a jailbreak for 4.2.1.

What you should do though is get connect your phone to iTunes so it gets activated and you can use it. Don't worry, SA phones are unlocked as mentioned.

Next get a US iTunes account and check out the awesomeness of the App Store. Instructions are on the iPhone tips/tricks post.

Yes, but at the moment it's still a tethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4. So you will have to plug your phone into the PC with every reboot. I would stay away from 4.2 for now until there is an untethered jailbreak.

I honestly don't see a real reason why you would want to jailbreak anyway. It is too much of a hassle and possibility of a risk - everytime there is a software update, you can't update until a patch comes out for your jailbreak etc. I would agree that in past iOS versions, a JB was quite handy, but not so much anymore

IMHO opinion, the current iOS on iPhone does everything I need, and I have no temptation in the slightest to do a JB.

BTW I am due for an MTN upgrade next week, where did you get your MTN iPhone from ? I want to upgrade my 3GS to an iPhone 4

I got one from MTN direct, well they have stock, waiting for mine to be delivered.

With regards to jailbreaking, if you've used lockinfo once, you would realise you can not live without it (IMHO of course), the piece of software is a life saver ergo jailbreak
