Iphone 4 or Samsung galaxy S

You can either buy the apps straight from the developer or from an alternative app store like slideme.org. There's also the option of rooting the phone and using Market Enabler or something if you're ok with that kind of thing.
The Android Market has user ratings and comments so it's easy to check if the app is good or not before downloading. It also has plenty of quality free apps, personally I don't even use any paid apps and I'm very happy with what I have.

Apple app store with all apple's stringent quality checks you know you are getting quality apps, even the free ones are great and you have an option to purchase the higher quality apps.

I thought you needed a US Itunes account to be able to do anything with it???
 
I also had to make this choice, and hardware wise they aren't similar. The SGS is superior in the hardware department. The Iphone screen has a better resolution, but it is just amoled and not super amoled. I think the Iphone's battery is actually better than the SGS's. The question you have to ask yourself is are you going to conform to the iPhone way or do you want more freedom.

if you look at the gsmarena comparison you will see the SGS beats the iPhone in almost all the departments except application base and design(built quality). Another negative about the iPhone (and one of the big ones that made me choose the SGS) is that in South Africa you won't be able to make or receive video calls, because we don't have the networks that they restrict you on.

And the iPhone doesnt have support for java (another big one).

I have only played with the iPhone, but it is a really nice device, if you can live without video calling and like the way iOS works then by all means do it. Another thing I have to mention, I was really dissappointed with the phone when I got it, but when I got froyo all my irritations just went away. But coming from a blackberry I think most of my irritations was that I couldn't download and browse as much as i wanted to now. But I have set up a wireless access point at home so everything looks good now.

But remember Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen vs LED-backlit IPS TFT, capacitive touchscreen. In the match up on gsmarena they gave the Samsung Galaxy S the better score...

You can only see the difference in sharpness when you hold the phones too damn close to your eyes. Although I'd say if the Galaxy S had a slightly lower resolution or bigger screen then the difference would show. If you get a chance look at the SGS screen in person, it's impressive the first time you see it. Although once you get used to it then other screens look crappy, looking at my mom's Blackberry makes my eyes hurt :p
Both are good screens. Personally I think the extra size on the SGS screen is better for web browsing, especially if you browse desktop sites then you can just hold the phone on it's side and you will hardly ever need to zoom in to read the site comfortably.
 
myBB is perhaps not the best place to ask for advice on these two phones... The running skirmish between the SGS and iPhone factions seems to go on and on and on and on and on...
For every argument for the SGS there is a counter-argument for the iPhone and visa versa. You really do need to check the actual phones out for yourself and then make the choice on which one you'd prefer to live with.

Which is really easy and risk free to get.
So straight out the box you get access to the best apps.
Android you have to work to get the good stuff.

Good point. Because downloading 2 apps and running them is very difficult :)

Its okay checking both phones first, but you still need to do some research as you will NEVER be able to exploit each phone's strength by just looking or quick browse
At the end of the day its all about personal choice
If you like it, can afford it, why not
I got my self an iphone, and "I'm loving it".
And for those who say you cant play flash videos, I saw an app for that ($9.99), I may just buy that

What do you mean when you say "The SGS is superior in the hardware department." but latter say "the SGS beats the iPhone in almost all the departments except application base and design(built quality)."
Am I missing something

On specs the the SGS has better hardware. The design(built quality) I refered to is more aesthetic comparison and packaging. Just read through the review. It is a nice read. In all the departments the two phones are really close. And their closing is also very relevant , when they say you should choose a phone that will suit you. I wanted a bit more freedom, so I chose the SGS.

Hahahaha... There was an episode of Boston Legal where one of their clients (an objectophile) wanted to legally marry an iPhone. Everyone kept saying "Well, they are sexy"

I totally agree with your personal choice point and I also agree you should do your own research... I just think that on myBB it's become a SGS is the ONLY phone or iPhone is the ONLY phone kinda thing. Both these phones and OS's are pushing the cell phone world forward into a fantastic place, but right now, and on this forum, it always ends up in a knock-down, drag-out fight between the two camps.
