Iphone 4 or Samsung galaxy S

Get both, hook them up, and kill the offspring until one pops out that's got the strengths of both parents. That's the best answer I can give to this aeonian question.
 
OK,got the phone today.And have to say i hate and love it.
Played a bit with a galaxy s also this weekend and it would be very close.
The iphone feels solid where the SGS feels to plastic,and the screen on the SGS is better.(oh and itunes suck BIG time)
The iphone works faster than the SGS,apps and so on does open very fast.Something important was the way the phones feels in your hand,and here the iphone rocks.
The screen size of the SGS is nice(for movies),but in a phone i reckon nothing bigger than 3.7" is needed.
Well i think in the end its up to each person what he likes and not,none off these phones are perfect.

Agreed, until they have at least 1 weeks worth of battery life per charge they won't be perfect :) (never mind the OS updates etc etc )
 
If you like using peripherals with your device (like hooking up to car stereo's, clock radio's etc. etc.) then get the iPhone 4. The difference between available peripheral options for the iPhone/iPod "dock" compared to just the 3.5mm jack on the Galaxy S makes a huge difference to me. I have the SGS, but miss some of the options with the iPhone and my iPhone 3G feels too slow to be useful now. The amount of iPhone accessories out there is stunning and some of them are really cool and useful. On my SGS I'm basically just stuck with whatever software is on the phone without the option of buying some cool hardware for it.

That's completely uninformed, you pay far more for the iphone stuff because of the propriety connector, the Galaxy S has a micro-usb and 3.5mm which automatically makes it compatible with thousands of gadgets, everything Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, HTC, and Motorola make is already compatible with this phone and because there are so many third party manufacturers prices are far lower. There are nearly no 'Galaxy S' branded gadgets but that means nothing because most things are compatible with the Galaxy, the situation is not the same with the iphone.

OK, fine, but I haven't seen any of these devices on the shelves. If you could point me to an awesome Bose (or other good brand) clock/radio system with support to play MP3's off the SGS using USB that would be great.
And I don't mean devices that play music via the 3.5mm jack, with the iPhone the devices can interact with the phone's OS via the dock, I wasn't aware you could do that on any android phone via USB?

Then again, even if you could do that it won't help squat since the SGS USB connector is on the top of the phone, which makes it quite pointless if you're looking for something that cradles the phone (and you can forget about a remote control)
It doesn't matter what you say, the fact is that the iPhone is without doubt #1 when it comes to cool/useful accessories, not just that, but third party manufacturers all love to add iPod/Phone support to their devices.

Just a while back I bought my GF a (cool but cheap-ish) Samsung Micro Hi-Fi system with HDMI support, DVD Divx support etc. etc. and lo and behold the thing had an awesome iPhone/iPod dock. You NEVER see support like this for any other phone because no other phone has kept the basic fuctionality the same while adding features to it like the iPhone has. I mean, Samsung doesn't even support docking their own damn phones to THEIR components. Just shows you how awesome that "propriety connector" is. Yes I know, if it wasn't for the iPod.... but that doesn't change the facts.

Quite simply, with other brands models tend to die out or change beyond recognition and there's no consistent standard so there's no way to create dedicated support in perpipherals that work with all Android phones (or is that beginning to happen?), with the iPhone, the same phone just keeps evolving, your older peripherals keep working with it, and you can bet your ass your next iPhone will STILL work with them...and then some.

So, yeah, I hear all this crap about Android being so "open" etc. compared to the Apple Universe (don't even get me started on that), but truth be told, I think the great 3rd party support Apple has gained over the years from almost all manufacturers has made up for any redundant irritating locked-down anti-iPhone attributes you can think of.

I agree with Raptor,also went looking for docking stations for any other phone apart from apple and could not find anything.
Got my iphone 4 on Saturday and have to say the more i use it,the more i love it.
Some things like itunes still gripe me,but the rest is perfect.
Bought a logitech docking sation and its lovely!
Both phones are to close to call,but i reckon iphone 4 wins ( by small margin) if you take everything into account.
And also resale value for iphone is always WAY better than any other phone.

The Galaxy S has DLNA (Allshare), so devices that support it can play music and video off it wirelessly. I think DLNA is still relatively new so it's not all that common yet.
Newer TVs support it, and on PC Windows Media Player can be used to share and play stuff through DLNA.
It's a pretty awesome feature, just needs time to become more popular.

Oh yeah, I've played around with it using a PC. Pretty cool. Like you said, I do hope we see this feature in all future multimedia systems.
I still like a dock though, it's clean and simple and doesn't chew up your battery, which on the SGS I have is a huge problem. (forgot my cable at home today and I charged it yesterday afternoon, the phone is already dead)

I reckon they're so close that if you buy a SGS you'll think it's the best, and if you buy an iPhone 4 you'll also think it's the best.
Point is, you won't feel screwed. I basically chose the SGS above the iPhone 4 because I wanted to try something new, and I like Android (oh, and I'm a huuuuge sucker for AMOLED technology, can't wait 'till we get it in our living rooms)

I think personal preferences will usually sway most people towards one or the other though.
 
Raptor, there are docks available for the SGS and some nice ones too. I went to my local MTN store here in Centurion when I bought my phone and they had stuff you could use. The dock they showed me was one with a strap, so you have to place it and then connect it on top, so it isn't as swift as the other phones that you just slide in, but it did still look ok. I am looking for a L shaped one that you can just slip in, but couldn't find it yet.

Yeah, it sucks about the location of the USB dock, but still, it's better than nothing.

I'm just bitter because the other day I was browsing the net, looking for a replacement radio for my car's prehistoric built in system (2001 MX-5) and I came across this AWESOME Pioneer radio specifically built for the 2001-2005 MX-5 with an extra port custom made to plug into the existing speaker setup, including a custom designed iPhone/iPod cradle that attaches seamlesslly into the dash. Holy crap, how awesome is that, it's almost unfair how easy it is to find iPhone accessories for cars, even old cars.
Not to mention the entire kit was only about R1500-2000.

The guy at mtn said to me that because the charger interface is going to be standard in europe - the charger we currently have on the SGS, and the new BB etc, that most accessories would be likely be "friendly" to us in the future. He was a big BB fan, but he had allot of knowledge about most phones. I must say that MTN's stores here have some very good staff.

Jip it's true all phones are standardizing on the micro USB port. Not sure about Apple thou
 
Speaking of docks, Blackberry's also got this covered with their USB dock for the Storm 1 and 2. Its not as widespread as the iPhone's docking is, but it works pretty damn well, and your Storm turns into a desktop clock while plugged in.

There are very few docking options for devices, and if more manufacturers would pay attention to this need, then I wouldn't have to lug around so many cables with me when I go back to work or home.

This docking issue matters. I bought myself a Yamaha docking solution for my iPhone 4 and I can now listen to quality sound with my iPhone is charging at the same time. When going to bed at night I place the iPhone in the dock to charge and then play streaming internet radio throughout the night to be woken by songs from my loaded music selection as alarm. With the iPhonei there are just so many options at all price points and they are readily available.
