Vodacom are SLACK!!! Look at any overseas companies selling the iPhone, they pump the advertising. with Vodacom, you only find out 2days before the launch. and then the uptake is so minimal. it's pathetic.

i asked 2 different vodacom stores, one said mid-august and the other said only next year but maybe december.. I don't even want to know what they're gonna charge.

Apple is struggling to keep up with demand and we're a 3rd tier country with regard to priority for the iPhone, so I think that's pretty optimistic (mid-August)

Apple are coping with the iPhone 4 Black its the iPhone white they have a problem with and the iPad that stock is an issue. So far iPhone's are launching around the world as per schedule but time will tell... We always seem to be an after thought thanks to Vodacom,no doubt, they are very "oh an iPhone 4 really what's that... Really a phone by Apple...as in the fruit??"

Well MTN are getting it this time around too ...

I HIGHLY doubt that.... mtn has no affiliation with vodafone whatsoever (which is how vodacom obtains their iPhone's) They are going to have to wait a while for Apple to release in all 88 countries, then let them scrape up the left overs. Besides they show no interest in it either, i see no posters in store.... no online registration or mention of it. Just a bunch of bloggers assuming that now vodacoms iPhone exclusivity contract is over, MTN is ganna get iPhone.

They are NOT "coping", with even the black one. There is a 3 week wait for one, even in the UK.

We ARE an afterthought, because we do not have a direct Apple presence in this country. That means we are usually at the end of the list for them. But at least we get them "officially", even if much later, so there is support on the iTunes App Store, etc - many countries don't even feature on there.

And I am sure that Vodacom are very keen to sell them, after all they make buckets of money on each one ...

That is not true. If you order online then yes you will wait 3 weeks, but there are plenty in store. Family in UK;)

Mark my words, MTN will have offer.

True....MTN has very quietly, and without fanfare, become one of the largest networks in the world - now with 120 million subscribers....largely due to it's presence right through Africa, and then penetrating the middle-east market. MTN is huge, and that means it has buying power and influence. Don't underestimate MTN.

In the corporate world, manufacturer's sit bolt upright, and become very humble in the presence of companies that have so much clout. I am not in the cellular business, so perhaps ocleroux can comment.....from what I understand, Vodacom is bigger than MTN in South Africa. But in total subscriber base, MTN is way, WAY bigger than Vodacom

Also heard from a Vodashop in JHB that they expect pricing 1st August and stock mid-August... I'll believe it when I see it though!

I wonder if sales will be strong? won't more people avoid it because of the antennagate hype?

I doubt it, had a supplier over here from the States yesterday with his Iphone 4, tried the deathgrip and was still able to make calls and surf the web with very little slow down when the phone was naked (no cover), it was similar to the loss of signal you get when going inside sometimes. With the cover on no issues or signal loss at all.We tested this is multiple locations around northern Jhb. The irony is I already hold my Nokia E71 in a slightly odd way because that DOES result in dropped calls if i cover the top half of the phone while chatting. So in short in my personal experience, the Iphone 4 antenna issue is less of an issue than my current E71. Still can't decide whether I want the Iphone or the Galaxy S tho.... I like both Android and Apple environs for different reasons. Android because it allows me to be more of a geek, Apple because it will fit so nicely into may already Apple setup lifestyle (Car dock, Bedside dock, MBP etc) plus it will do everything I want from a phone...

Thanks for posting this. Not only is it the first firsthand account from someone in SA using an SA network but you have included first hand experiences of another handset (one that is targeted by Apple as having similar issues.)

Could you please indicate which network these phones were on? It may be interesting. *looks over glasses at Cell C*

My e71 is on Vodacom, tho I have friends on MTN with the same issue so it appears to be device specific. The supplier phone was working off a roaming agreement and was showing Vodacom...

This week, maybe. 2 weeks ago there were none to be had. I know, because I tried to get one at 4 different Apple shops.

They've been saying that for over a year now. Just a way of putting the brakes on migration to Vodacom. I know how these bliksems work was in the game for 7 years.

Well here is something to chuckle about, I just visited the Vodashop in gateway, say they getting the iPhone 4 in January:D lol i guess its time to make a visit to ebay.

I just wish this whole Iphone 4 launch thing would start to clear up now,
I hate the secrecy and the exclusivity around the whole thing.

I have spoken to MTN retensions, Vodacom Retensions, Vodaworld, CORE and Even Apple US to try to find out when we poor people in africa can expect the damn phone ,
but it is always answered with "sorry my system says nothing about this".

if this thread is correct we will have the phone in 2 weeks , which is very optimistic.
