How much would be a fair price to pay for a second hand one? Between me and my wife we've had 5 or 6 six phones in the last two and a bit years, thus I am not buying any new phones anymore.

Neither of us has ever had an iPhone, only android phones, but my wife seems to like this.
 
I'd think the value considerably dropped after Monday's WWDC since the iPhone 5 won't be getting iOS 11, so it's now officially a old phone. A couple of months ago iStore still had the 5s CPO for R5000, a good guess is that this 5 will be worth around R3000 maybe a bit less.
Have you looked on Takealot? Today they have a iPhone 6 plus CPO for I think R6000.
 
I can get a second hand one for 1800. Good value? I'm not spending big bucks on phones again, feels like a waste of money. Just there for whatsapp and some internet use.
 
Sounds like a good price. We sold our 5S 16GB for R3000 about a month back, but it was in excellent condition.

Be that as it may I think you're setting yourself for some disappointment. Maybe aim for the 5s or SE which will at least be able to take advantage of iOS11?
 
R1800 is a very good price. Nothing wrong with the iPhone 5 or iOS 10, but don't expect myricals, it is after all a couple years old. If your plan is to use it as a cheap stepping stone to see if you like iOS and plan to upgrade to a 6 or SE in the next few months or a year, then go for it.

Not for me, for my wife. But now she decided again she is not sure if she wants this.
