I managed to square one out of my son for my upcoming birthday present.
My 32gb cost AUS$899 which would currently be about R8600 at our present exchange rate.
Stocks are no problem either. An Apple TV @ AUS$109 currently still sits in its packaging in my lounge waiting to be set up.
Great to be back home again, but I miss the choice available to Aussie buyers.

Yes. They sell locked and unlocked versions. That price was for the unlocked version.

Vodashop Waterfront are selling iphone 5 16gigs at R8799 with full 12month warranty on the device. Currently only have a few units in White left. I myself am an employee there so if you would like me to keep you one, just sent me a PM and ill set one aside for you. I'm only able to keep them aside for 48hours there-after they are removed. We got 20 units in, a handful are left. All our devices are fully unlocked and we have stock of nano sim cards.

According to the postbox-courier faq, items with a declared value of over R500 will attract customs duties. My experience with customs is that they don't have a standard method to calculate import duties. I think they have a circular area thats sectored with different percentages. When they need to calculate a value, they throw in a headless chicken and if it dies on the 37% sector, then thats what you pay.

The only time I ever avoided customs was when a friend brought in two Apple TV's from the US for me. The rest of the time I got boned by customs.
 
Samsung Note 2 LTE comes with 2 year guarantee from Samsung. What guarantee will you get with the iPhone 5? I think Vodacon is the only place with stock at the moment as they have the buying power because they supply worldwide through Vodafone. That is why Vodacon can put the price up and still sell. Vodacon's cost price for the soon to be replaced iPhone 5 is probably around R 2, 000.00
 
If you have any friends going to Hong Kong, it retails for just under R6000
