iPhone 5S NFC?..

I think the reply is related more to your post than your phones.

That post was a joke.....hence the big smiley at the end of it. I have devices on both platforms and am constantly amused at how people have a go at each other online with their undying support to apple or google

Or maybe they'll continue doing what they've been doing quite successfully so far

Marketing?

It'd be fantastic if for once they could be ahead of the curve - or at least equal it

Editing doesn't work - but by that I don't mean just NFC, but I notice they don't have the latest wifi standards either?

Right so as they're so far behind the curve could you show me all the Android manufacturers pushing BLE? Does the Android core even support it?

But omitting 802.11ac was disappointing.

Here we go sorry it was introduced into the android stack in 4.3. I had the impression it still wasn't supported. Took them a while though, as with TRIM.

Point being Apple's negligence of NFC isn't them being backwards. They don't think there is much future in it and they're actively pushing alternatives, and seems like BLE is a big component of that.

I have to disagree there. It is more just Apple being, well, Apple. Instead of giving you a choice of what you want to use they force you to use BLE. Instead of embracing the technology that so many other manufacturers (source)are already on board with they decided that you as a Apple user doesn't need it.

You, disagree with me about Apple? Shocker!

Ok here's the approach Google takes with Android: see standard, support standard in the stack, get partners to include the chip in their phones, don't do anything to build out the infrastructure themselves to support it. So you have the choice, but it's up to someone else to come along and do the hard work of making it happen - and naturally everyone looks at Apple as the ones who must create the systems that make it work.

I had NFC on the Xperia V. They gave me NFC tags that I was meant to do something with. I never once switched it on or opened one of the tags. It seems like not only Apple, but even the ones who are behind the technology, aren't embracing it so much as gingerly dipping a halfhearted toe into the water to see if it will get any traction. What's needed to make it a success is a far deeper hardware integration at the POS in shops. And that...sorry...isn't happening. Too many wallet standards around for shopowners to even begin to support it.

What can I say, it makes my day go by faster :)

Do you really think Apple did the right thing by not including NFC? With their support NFC could/would have become the standard. Instead, they shun the technology for something that needs to be rolled out almost from scratch across all vendors.

Bottom line is, NFC sucks. I've never seen a successful implementation. The last time I tried to NFC-share content between two Android devices it 1) didn't work, but worked fine in Bluetooth, 2) felt uncomfortably intimate.

If Apple can find a better solution for the things NFC is trying to accomplish like quick sharing, point of sale and so on, why shouldn't they? It's not like they've been doing nothing on this front. The combination of BLE and secure enclave fingerprint scanning based authentication could be very potent and secure.
