iPhone 6s

By many other phones, are you referring to Windows phones?

Not sure what you mean about image factor, please elaborate.
Yes and many high end Androids. Nexus, htc one etc.

You know what I mean regarding image.

Back to topic:
Hopefully going to make my way to Canal Walk later. May just come home with a 6s 64gb.

All the Androids I've known have become dramatically slower/slow over time. The owners complain about it.

I'm sure a reinstall may help, but the point is that this isn't necessary with iPhone.

No I don't, please elaborate.

Heard many stores of Sammy phones in particular; high end ones; 2/3 yrs old that slow down big time. Guessing a Nexus or very light skinned Android eg. Moto phones shouldn't be too bad then.

I can't imagine have the same device for 3 years :erm:, no matter what the brand/OS. My guess is people will get tired after x amount of time and just take out another contract to get a new device. If I'm not mistaken the US/UK are moving towards 12 month contracts, this just seems like an evil strategy of some sorts.

Personally not the best analogy when one consider how much % of ones monthly income a car installment takes up vs a ones cellphone contract charge.

But yes 3 yrs is ages in the tech/phone world.

My question is how come the other 3 networks did not catch on (yet) & offer this well...or maybe they will after seeing how MTN clients respond.

But the concept is the same... pay less monthly but more overall. At least with a car it's life expectancy is significantly longer than that of a phone.

There are some really bad Android skins out there (Touchwiz, LG whatever they call it) which are bloated and definitely do slow down over time. It's especially bad when they put that same carp on a mid range phone which can tarnish Android. For the most part it seems to be getting better as per reviews / write ups / friends opinions.

On the other hand there is vanilla Android which has never had any of these problems. Skins from HTC, Motorola and Sony do not deviate much from vanilla and it shows.

What was your last Android phone? An old Samsung something? Maybe it is time to have another look.

I have not done a factory reset on an Android device since a Samsung S3.

I am not going to do any ego stroking. It is widely known that a iPhone is a status symbol and that reason alone is, IMO, why many many many people buy an iPhone. Of course there are also many people that buy it for other legitimate reasons (ecosystem, etc). In my experience, in SA anyway, the former is more prominent.

Works both ways I guess.

Still happy as a pig in poop with my iPhone 5s. :)

And Samsungs and LGs among a couple others make up about 90% of all Android devices. Therefore most users use TouchWiz or LG's version, and therefore most Androids slow down.

Vanilla Androids make up a tiny percentage though. I'm aware that other manufacturers have better skins.

Status symbol? Any high end device whether it's a phone or a car or a house, can be seen as a status symbol. But who are the ones seeing this, is it the person who owns these status symbols, or is it perhaps the people who don't...?

What you're doing is taking the materialistic mindset that many people may have, regardless of which brand/device they prefer, and saying it's mainly an Apple thing, and the reason behind why many people buy iPhone. That is just nonsense.

How do you form this opinion? Do you work/socialise with very shallow people? I'm sure you don't, so what do you base this on?

Yea sure, but imagine now having to spend another 12 months with it, assuming you took out a 36 month contract at the start of Jan 2014, while new phones come out, with new features etc. Personally I don't think I would :p

Just wondering is this 3 year contracts only a iPhone6s/6sPlus thing or is it going to be generaly available.

Agreed, it's much harder if you're a more technically inclined person. For the laymen out there (the majority of users), I don't think it's as big an issue.

I would happily plod along with my 1GB 5s for another year. My work phone is a 3 year old iPhone 5, still an absolute pleasure to work with and barely any slowdown whatsoever.

Compare to the 6s now with 2GB RAM, I think it will be perfect after 2 - 3 years. :)

If I had a 5s I'd keep it for at least 2 more years.

Like I said, even Touchwiz is supposedly better now as per just about every trusted reviewer. There was a time when what you are saying was correct but that is no more and blanket statements such as "all Androids slow down" is nonsense.

I would say both see it. As with people you are probably going to get a mix bag as in you will get some people who are jealous of those with said status symbol and you will get others who will laugh at those who think an iPhone makes them superior. Like here on myBB just the other day (maybe this thread?), a couple of forumites seemed to think the only reason not to get an iPhone is when one cant afford one... LOL.

Thankfully no. As it happens very few people I know own iPhones which is not a good or a bad thing. I know a brilliant software architect who is fully vested in Apple and if you ask him why he will give a ton of good reasons. On the other hand it seems like the iPhone is the choice device for bimbos and 'manne' which is more what I am talking about.

I guess we'll see in 2 - 3 years.

I never said that.

I think most people tend to just buy what they can afford.

I doubt those forumites were being serious. Besides, a Galaxy costs about the same.

I find this a bit judgemental. Just because they're bimbos and manne, does not mean they can't think.

I've also noticed a fair share of them with Galaxys. :)

With regards to the 36 month contract... I don't wait for my upgrade to change phones so something like this is nice as I get the new phone and I'm not paying an arm and a leg for it. I'd happily pay R350 per month or R7000 cash for a used one but will not spend R490 per month on a contract. I just don't like the idea of a high monthly payment.

And now to the android phones... I've had many Droids and iPhones and this is what I feel:
In terms of 3 years, that's the max I'd keep any phone. The S2 is comparable to the 4 even now and so is the S3 to the 4S. The android may be marginally slower but not too visibly. The S4 was bad though and the iPhone 5 will be faster... S5 was a massive improvement :)

IMO, the choice of OS is based on personal preference... iOS is very smooth, but so is Android on the S5, S6, P8, P8 Lite and so on that I've had in the last few months (I've had 30 to 40 phones in the last 2.5 years).

One thing that has always been better with Apple is the hardware quality and lack of bloatware (looking at Samsung!). There have been some really good quality android phones in the past few years (HTC One range) that could rival Apple and the bloat seems to be becoming better :)

The last generation of Samsungs show this - the S6/Edge is a massive improvement over the previous generation S5. The hardware quality is finally up there with Apple! Bloat has also reduced significantly, although carriers do still load a bit of crap on them. The software still needs more optimisation to be on par with iOS 9 but it's definitely getting there...

To me, on flagships, the specs don't count much anymore. I'd recommend choosing the OS you want and then grabbing the flagship you think suits you best within the OS. IOS and android aren't so different when flagships are compared - it's mostly personal preference now :)

The latest iPhone I've had is the 5S (had 2) but I'm getting a 6 Plus later today if all goes well and will post my thoughts and compare it to my S6 Edge

PS, I'm not a fan boy for any of the operating systems - I switch all the time!

I don't know hey, this three year contract sounds pretty good to me.

Especially since I'm strongly considering getting another iPhone 5S when upgrading my contract for an iPhone 5S.

Apple hardware does last that long and so the usual 2 year rule because I NEED a working device doesn't apply.

I'd rather have an older iPhone for longer than pay through my ass for a new one.

Another year would kill me and then I would have skipped the whole S nonsense and gotten a 7 next had I been on a 3 year contract now.

But then I think all contracts are a sham now and I'll just buy a device cash and go prepaid from now on.
