My iPhone 7 plus started showing the no service message message last week Friday. If I restart the phone or reset network settings, it temporarily fixes the problem. Removing/installing the SIM card also helps. I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem, software problem or MTN being useless. I did a hard reset and it made no difference.

I then downgraded to iOS 10.3.1 and it seems fine for now. This was a known issue last year but I assumed it was sorted out via a software update. Anyone else experience this problem?

The software downgrade didn't help. It's doing the same thing again.

Have you tried a a different sim? Perhaps try a different sim from a different provider just to rule out if it's a MTN or sim issue.

Maybe try switching to 2G keep it like that for a few hours or a day or 3? Do the same with 3G & LTE and see if this helps.

When i'm at home or near home, the phone is on LTE and it generally works fine. When i'm at work, where signal is not so good, the phone does the no service thing. Previously, it used to move down from LTE to 3G or even Edge but I could still make calls and use WhatsApp etc. Now, it seems almost like it can't switch to lower speeds without jumping straight to no service.

If it's on no service and I switch on Airplane mode and then switch it off again, it returns to 3G or LTE. If I then set it to 3G only, it then goes to no service.

I used a vodacom sim card from another iPhone 7 and it didn't help at all. Not sure what else to do besides sending the phone in for repair.

I leave mine permanently on 3G and I don't have any issues including speed. I know if it's set on LTE only the phone constantly searches for lte and when it's not found should switch to 3G. Can you check with someone else on the same network and similar phone to compare?

If u bought it second hand it it is blacklisted... happened to me, bought off a "reseller " that bought off a oak that stopped paying his contract.

If that is the case u now have a nice ipod.

Then it wouldn't work some of the time.

It's getting worse now. It's no showing now service at home as well. Thankfully I didn't buy it second hand but it's still a pain having to take it in and wait however long it takes to get fixed.

Try another network?

I did. I used a Vodacom SIM card that works fine on another iPhone 7 and it doesn't work on my phone.

I'm assuming now that it's a hardware fault. Planning to take it in tomorrow.

Well today my iPhone started the same **** but fortunately after a restart it was fine.

Previously on a 3GS I think this happens when iFix did a battery swop and somehow damaged the SIM slot.

Maybe it's a sensitive solder point or something.

Unlikely. Rather the antenna connector got lose and they didn't notice that.

True.

Come to think of it I seem to recall the SIM not being recognised as the issue. But the result is of course no service too which threw me off.

The phone was replaced by iStore. They didn't say what the actual fault was. Thankfully the new phone is working 100%, for now.
