iPhone and Dubai

Hi

I'm going to Dubai in October of this year and I'm looking at buying an iPhone 3G around this time too. My question is should I buy it here on there? I'm guessing its alot cheaper to buy in in Dubai but I have no idea if i'd be able to use it here if i get back in South Africa. I'm not really that good/keen about chipping or how I can get that done quickly so it works when I get home. I'm also only going to be in Dubai for 8 days doing tours etc so may not have much time to go buy the phone :x

I've seen alot of people are actually selling it locally imported, can you make calls fine and stuff with for example a Vodacom SIM card on an imported iPhone? I'd rather buy it here then if it's less fuss and I can get a working one with ease even tho it's more expensive..but if i'm going to Dubai anyway...

By that time a software unlock should be available worldwide so if you find it cheaper there then buy it. You can always make it work on the SA networks.

There already is a software unlock for the iPhone 3G and it's a very simple procedure to do. If you find the phone cheaper than R7000 in Dubai then buy it from there.

No software unlock yet unfortunately AFAIK. Only SIM card adaptor thing.

But i have a 2G so dont pay much attention to the 3G side of things.. SO i could be wrong

Read fxit_mans post above, so far there is no software unlocking for the 3g
The only way is to use those sim card fixes.

What is a SIM card fix and what does it do?

Its basically a sim card adapter for your own sim card which fakes the id of an at&t sim card allowing the phone to operate

Not really.. They usually sell them with the phone in Dubai. Well at least that was the case with the 2G version before the software unlock was available

But you can just order it yourself online
