iPhone development as a career?

Hello
Well it seems that iPhones are still being bought and total iPhone apps are estimated to increase to 300 thousand by end of this year.
So it's a successful smart phone, and I've read that with the right software you can develop for Android as you'd for iPhone and that's important as one would become "cross platform" and take advantage of the growing Android community.
I'm asking if you go into iPhone development(and you don't succeed with your own apps:D)
then are there good career opportunities if you need to find a job?

Have you done any iPhone dev work yet? We do get requests for it from time to time but have to show the clients away cause we don't have an iPhone developer. So yes, you would be able to get a lot of work on iPhone platforms if you can dev it :)
 
As I always say, if you can read, you can program. So if you're a programmer, picking up developing for the iPhone won't be that much of a learning curve. There is a market for it yes, but don't specialize in something that people (especially in SA) won't be looking for at this moment
 
you'll need to have a mac, download xcode and the sdk, sign up as a developer on the apple site and learn objective c.
the only framework that i know of which can compile to iphone and android is rhomobile, in which case you would need to learn ruby.
mosync is c based but doesn't support iphone yet.
alternatively, check out phonegap if you're just wanting to do browser-based stuff with limited system access.
adobe has promised to support iphone by the time flash cs5 comes out.
keep me posted on how things go your side.
i'm also getting started on mobile dev at the moment.
 
Titanium compiles natively to android and iPhone, and you only code in html/js. Quite awesome from what I have seen. Still need a mac for it.
 
that looks quite promising.
especially with py/php/ruby, native controls and blackberry support coming up.
the licensing looks good too - one of the issues i have with alternatives is that it costs an arm and a leg for a commerical license.

anybody else doing mobile dev? what do you use?
 
I use a hackintosh running Snow Leopard and XCode. It's the best. I'm still a beginner but hoping to jump onto this bandwagon.
 
what's the hardware spec on your hackintosh?
Cheap!
Asus P5KPL-AM SE motherboard (like R400)
Intel E3300 Celeron Dual Core CPU 2.5ghz (What's great about it is it supports hardware VT!)
2gb RAM (1 stick)
500gb HDD SATA
Generic Case, PSU, DVD-ROM
17" LCD screen
nVidia 8400gs graphics

And it runs amazingly well!

i would have thought that more ram was needed.
is the 64-bit cpu required?
 
Well all Intel cpu's have been 64-bit since the late Pentium-4's.

The required minimum RAM for Leopard is 512mb and for Snow Leopard it's 1gb - and it runs well on that. 2gb is great but I'm upgrading to 4gb soon.
 
I think better to keep Windows sea. :) More offers, wide spreading of OS, Third party components, many books/courses/forums/etc. Windows market TIMES more than Apple, so choice is obvious.
