OK so my friend's PC got formatted, and he hasn't synced his iPhone for more than a month because she's scared she will lose everything she has on it...
Now if she syncs, will everything be deleted? If so, how do you backup?

Yes, she will loose everything. I lost my paid apps, including Galaxy on Fire. *sniff*

I HATE itunes with a passion.

when you sync it with itunes it gives you the option to erase etc... when you sync it you can backup PAID apps to your PC... and you can use iDump to get all your music/picz/movs off it... as for contacts... surely it saves them on her sim?

Didn't you just download them again?

Yes. If you have bought them, you can simply login with your apple idand download them again.
Not sure about contacts, I use Exchange so have never had a problem with losing contacts.

While we're on the subject of formatting - you can add 5 computers to your account, right. What happens if you format 5 times without deauthorizing the PC first? Is there any way of removing the other authorizations from your account?

Here we go:

(from apple.com)
To deauthorize all computers associated with your account

If you find you have reached 5 authorizations, you can reset your authorization count by clicking Deauthorize All in the Account Information screen.

1. Click iTunes Store in the menu on the left side of iTunes.
2. If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
3. Click the Account button again (your ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
4. In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.

Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than 5 authorized computers, or if you have used this option within the last 12 months. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact the iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww/).
