Hi,
I was looking into the price of iPhones here, and the price seems ridiculously high. So I looked on Apples store for Canada, because I have relatives there who are coming here soon, and the price is a hell of a lot lower.

It says 660 CAD for a 16GB iPhone 4 with free shipping in Canada. It also says that it is 'commitment-free' which I assume means unlocked. So will a iPhone from there work here and is it actually less expensive or am I missing something?

It is unlocked, the iPhones in Canada are unlocked. The contract prices here aren't too bad but the cash price of the iPhone here is pretty high.

So would you recommend getting a new iPhone contract here, or getting an iphone from canada and using an existing contract?

I'd recommend getting an iPhone here on a contract. We've got them, and the prices aren't too bad. Get an iPad from Canada. We don't have those yet.

Get iPhone from here on contract. The Vodacom TopUp 275s contract is a bargain! Only R379, you get R275 airtime and 110mb data. Phone is free.

Yup,plus the warranty will be covered by vodacom

I have been looking around again and it seems that Mtn's contract is slightly more for the same price as vodacom. Do you not get proper insurance or something else?

Hmmm, Vodacom @ R379 x 24 = R9096 (I am not taking into account the free airtime and data)
Canadian iPhone @ $660 x 6.8 = R4488
Difference = R4608

Things that come to (my) mind are:
a) Do you have the cash to lay out (R4k is a nice saving).
b) No warranty on the phone unless you are back in Canada (as far as I googled).
c) Do you want to be bound to a contract? (perhaps you are not eligible for an upgrade yet / not qualify for credit)
d) How badly do you want an iPhone! :D

Thanks for the reply. From what has been posted on this thread it seems like a contact would be the way to go. It also looks like the actual price of the phone, not including the contract is more or less the same, getting the phone from canada or here.

I suppose a iPhone contract would also be better than the one I'm on now (Weekender everday, I think its like R140 pm or something) and the price of the contract excluding the phone is about R170 pm.

I also can't stand my current phone, a Samsung F480i. I think its warranty is finished, and now it randomly restarts itself and because its a capacitive touch screen, it enters my number without me knowing and locks me out of my phone!

Hmmm, Vodacom @ R379 x 24 = R9096 (I am not taking into account the free airtime and data)
Canadian iPhone @ $660 x 6.8 = R4488
Difference = R4608

Like you said, you are not taking into account the airtime and data. Take it into account and it's a whole difference picture.
Vodacom @ R379 - R275 airtime - 100mb data (worth R89) = R15 x 24 months = R360
Canadian iPhone @ $660 x 6.8 = R4488
Difference = R4128

The downside is binding oneself to a contract for 24 months. :erm:

I would rather say that one will be binding themselves to a 1 year contract as the first year could be thought of as paying off the iPhone (at CAd prices) then you pay 379 for 12 more months just for calls and data.

Thanks could someone please post a link to the vodacom web page (if it exists) of this contract(topup 275s).

Doe anyone think the iphone's price will drop by the end of the year (contract or prepaid) and if so how much?

Yeah they're legit. I'm generally seeing prices of like R2100-2300 for the 8gb model, and closer to R3000 for the 32gb. You can got to jump.co.z and pricecheck.co.za to get some comparison pricing.

I also saw that shop, Rampage Gaming. I think they're ok
