it might just be jailbroken (like mine) and then used with a turbosim. i bought mine in germany and returned it a few days later after restoring it to its orginal state because of the screen having a few pixels which didnt work. no problem at all, they just gave me a brand new iphone.

My bro is coming from shanghai end of april - he will bring iphones with if he can sell them - pm me if anybody would like to make an offer - a reasonable one mind you.

One thing many people who what it released in SA are overlooking is that even overseas you still pay the full retail price plus your monthly provider (contract) payment no one is getting iPhones for free on a R150pm contract!

The only thing you stand to gain by having them released here is the warranty, no small thing mind you but there it is, oh - and the retail price will be stupefying!

Heres the deal. AT&T have signed a 5 year contract with Apple (iPhones) so that the only carrier the iPhone can take is AT&T (This is why people use thing like ZiPhone, etc., to unlock their phones). Seeing that the contract is for 5 years, the iPhone can theoretically only come to SA in 4 years time as it would need to be used with another carrier here. By that time it would probably be outdated or replaced, maybe including new contracts between Apple and AT&T. So the only way to get the phone in the country is to buy one from an Apple store in the US (without the contract yet) and unlock it for a local Carrier.

If thats the case, how does this explain the iPhone in the UK on the O2 network and in France on the Orange Network?

But if Vodacom (very unlikely) or (Vodafone more likely) could strike a deal then theres a slight chance we might get it in SA...

Maybe we will get the iPhone 2 by next year if they dont pull the same AT&T stunt like they did with this one

also, its on t-mobile in germany (or at least, it was in december, not sure if it still is)

i recall reading a fair bit about that 5 year exclusivity contract so its most probably true that such a contract exists, but it most probably only applies to iphone sales in the US (where they have AT&T), unless the contract was amended later on to include O2 and Orange etc (which is unlikely).
either way, there are rumours going around about vodacom maybe going to stock the new iphones in june/july but those are only rumours and most probably rubbish too.

if SA does eventually get the iphone, i wouldnt imagine it being before countries like AUS and the rest of the UK and Europe gets it. btw, anyone know if the iphone has been released in japan/china yet? because if not, then those are extra countries which would most probably get it before we do...

We'll get it the day when we have a South African iTunes store, and thats never

good point. completely forgot about the itunes store issue. rather important in the whole iphone equation.
but lets hope you're wrong and we do get a itunes store eventually...

One of the Cape Town online PC store claimed they will be selling fully unlocked iphone with full local warranty (?) sometime in April. But I am not very optimistic about the price. Will probably get one from friends in US or UK which will still be cheaper.

2.0 SDK should bring loads of fun.

i wonder... maybe they're not going launch a music store for SA. maybe just enable, say, the UK store or US store to work with SA phones and cards and currency etc... just a random thought. though it doesnt make much sense cuz the costs involved in setting up and running a SA store would be like a drop in a bucket for Apple.

meh. i want the iphone to be officially released here now.
