Iphone Pricing, are we paying to much

As far as I know the ipod touch (R2699 current price for a 16gb model) and iphone ( 5 or 5s was about R8000-R10000 when it was released)are virtually the same thing, the iphone having a cellular and wifi connection, and the ipod only WIFI.

You get "the same product" in larger format as a IPAD, also in two versions, one with ONLY WIFI (like the ipod touch) and one with Cellular and WIFI (like the iphone).



I think its safe to compare the IPAD WIFI and IPAD WIFI and CELLULAR with a Ipod TOUCH (WIFI) and IPHONE(WIFI + CELLULAR)


For a IPAD the price difference between devices with and without Cellular is roughly R1800 why then
for a ipod/iphone is the price difference between devices with and without Cellular roughly R6000 +-

AND

from a ipod 16gb to 64gb the difference is R1300 which I presume is the (perceived) price of the memory and
From a iphone6 16 gb to 64gb the difference is R1400, so the cost(price difference) of memory is more or less the same( unfortunately there are no more iphone 5 64gb listed on the istore website to use that price).


SO WHY is a iphone with wifi only (AKA ipod touch) about R6000 cheaper that a iphone with WIFI/CELLULAR ( the real phone)

Battery: on ipod touch about 1,030 mAh - on iphone 5 about 1,440 mAh and on iphone 5s about 1,560 mAh
RAM: only 512Mb on ipod touch, but 1Gb for iphone 5 & 5s
SOC: Apple A5 for ipod touch, but A6 for iphone 5 and A7 for iphone 5s
Camera: only 5 megapixels on ipod touch, but 8 megapixels on both iphones

In the case of the iphone 5s, the Touch ID / fingerprint sensor hardware also contributes to higher costs

Not sure about the materials used in the ipod touch, but it doesn't feel as solid and high quality like the iphone in your hand. It certainly doesn't look as upmarket as the phone.

In the end, the ipad with or without cellular is essentially the same piece of hardware, except for the "cellular hardware"...the iphone was designed as a phone, the ipod touch as a souped up MP3 player with camera and internet capabilities. Who knows what other differences in terms of hardware are under the skin that we don't know of. I also think I once read somewhere that the microphone and speakers on the iphone is better than those in the ipod touch...

My question would be, a new iPhone 6 64Gig having a price tag of R11300, for that money I can buy a MacBook Air 11" and can do so much more. Didn't they go this time too far?

iPad's with similar spec, just bigger are way cheaper, and a LG G3 phone has everything in (and better hardware), and only 7k, so why do they charge so much? Just because they can I guess.
 
Yes they are "overpriced" you could argue, or not since they continue to sell. Apple gets away with charging this much for iPhones because of it's software, brand appeal etc.


The margins on iPhones are huge, even compared to Apple's other businesses.
 
Companies do not charge according to what it cost them to make, but rather on what the market can bear. Trust me Apple has done some research to maximize profit and they sell well at that price point.

Apple has done its homework, all items are selling well so regardless of why it costs more or less, it works for Apple. Since, when does the price depend only on cost of manufacturing ? If a company can sell an item for a higher cost because of things like color etc and there is a market for it then they will.
 
The iPod Touch is roughly as fast as an iPhone5 with half the ram, and has the camera of the 4s. I thought this was a thread about why South African prices are inflated, not Apple's products in general.

GPS is part of the 3G chip, it's a requirement by the FCC if I remember correctly so give 911 operators the ability to find out where you're calling from.
 
It could have been worse,it could have been last year. I have discovered a telkom mobile pamphlet from May 2014.

At the time a iPhone 5s were going for R549 pm on SmartPlan 100,the same as a iPhone 6Plus now. A iPhone 5s on SmartPlan 50 cost R499 pm the same as a iPhone 6 now on the better SmartPlan 100. Even a iPhone 5c were a nasty R429 pm on SmartPlan 50. It could have been worse.
 
Yes we are paying too much. But with the strong demand for the product, it does make business sense for a company (Any company with a product in great demand whether it be Samsung, Sony, HTC etc) to make as much profit on it as possible. No matter what the price of the phone, it seems that consumers are still willing to pay for it.

If the iPhone was not in such great demand then we would probably see a massive price drop.

No, it is only Apple that does this.

For example, Samsung wifi only tablets stll have GPS. Other manufacturers as well.
 
The interesting thing is that you could use that same Apple product for four years without any issue if you didn't fall into the "must upgrade" trap.

In doing so you would level out the initial premium cost.
 
If you buy any Apple device anywhere you are paying too much anyway. The material and production cost on most of their devices is estimated to average about 30% of the ticket price. But that's the premium people are prepared to pay because of the perceived value of the product. Quibbling about relative costs vs features, or regionally variable pricing is irrelevant. If you've made up your mind you want an iPhone/iPad/iPod/iMac the price you pay is the cost of membership to the "club", not in any way a reflection of the actual cost of the components.
