Apple's popular iPhone 3G will launch in South Africa on 28 September, according to industry sources.

The handset, which also includes iPod music playing capabilities, will be available from Vodacom on both contract and prepaid options.

As of yet no cost specifics have been confirmed, but it is estimated that a contract will include a R1500 to R2000 pay-in on a business contract for the 8GB model, and a R2000 to R2500 pay-in for the 16GB model.

On the pre-paid option, the iPhone 3G will likely retail for between R5000 and R6000 for the 8GB model, and between R7000 and R8000 for the 16GB model.

Apparently Vodacom is still finalising the pricing and awaiting approval for the handheld on its network, but Cellucity branches are already advertising the 28 September launch date.

Pre-bookings can be done via Cellucity or Vodacom itself.

We asked Vodacom for comment - will give feedback as soon as we hear from them.

Those prices are pretty much in line with what Apple have announced, so its not bad at all... Still trying to decide if I want an iPhone.

I'm waiting for the Bold - unless Vodacom comes out with a tariff plan similar to the Blackberry the cost of using the iPhone (in a manner I've become accustomed to) could be more prohibitive than the phone itself.

I would love to buy a Iphone3G but the Omnia also looks like a great phone.

Will take a look once both of them have launched and I have had a look at them for myself.
