iPhone software update

This is the problem when a product is so popular ... it will be targeted. Will Apple battle with iPhone security the way Microsoft battles with Windows? The iPhone must be at the top of the list of those wanting to hack/crack/break/steal/... things.

Not really, I see the flaw is in most Smartphones. Google already patched Android, I'm not sure about Windows Mobile yet (haven't heard anything about a security update being released yet) and I see Apple is also on the ball with their security update to the flaw...

I just hope it's not another 280mb+ download just for this one security flaw...

"This morning, less than 24 hours after the demonstration of this exploit, we've issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone," Tom Neumayr, an Apple spokesman, said.

Go to love the marketing spin. If you read some of the other articles around this problem (it affects other phones in similar ways), then you will find that the research team disclosed the flaw to Apple 6 weeks ago. So in fact they have had the chance to fix it for a while now and only released the patch because it's now public. I think they had it ready but were hoping to silently roll it into the 3.1 update

Has and does affect WinMo for some time too. Also: its really not that much of a risk... as I understand it, the exploit requires that the perpetrator know your cell number to begin with - that alone makes the likelihood of attack much less worrying.

Bad new mate it is a 280mb download. took me all of 2 min (VOX FISHBONE 4 x 4MB ADSL = 11MB/s on Ave) :D to download tho;) here is my problem. I have tons of Cydia app installed. I am sure I will lose all of it if I do a update that will stop hackers from controlling my iPhone with a SMS WTF:eek:

I am not ready to reinstall EVERYTHING just for a security patch. Am I being too lacks in my approach to this latest update?

lax.

...I don't think so - see my comment above (risk is very minimal.)
