iPhone TomTom app gets MapShare

Anyone know if this is any good for GPS in Durban? I use NDrive and its the biggest waste of money I ever had. Drives you through townships, can't search for places if you don't know the town they're in. POS.

I have been thinking of getting the TomTom app, but then a part of me says that it would probably just be better to get a Garmin 205 for not much more money.

I’ve got the TomTom app on my iPhone and I have a Garmin. I feel that the TomTom is far superior to the Garmin and is a whole lot more user friendly. The only problem is that it drains the battery on my iPhone.

it sux that the car kit it so expensive though.
If you were to buy the app, and the car kit, you can almost rather just buy the normal GPS in the end.

Yeah but you don't have to buy the car kit. I just plop my phone into the cup holder and it works just fine.

Money VERY well spent! I use TomTom HD daily on my commute between Fourways and Rivonia (only 16kms) but the traffic updates are amazing! Pity it drains the battery so much!

The route calculations are awesome and I find myself on a new route almost daily! The traffic updates and delay calculations are very dynamic!

Yeah but you can't make calls from your normal GPS now can you? I haven't used a TomTom device before so I can't comment on which is better but I can't see the app being so much worse than a dedicated device.

On the whole, I'm loving the app so far. Haven't had any issues and the app is very responsive. I've used the Samsung Navigator GPS app on my Omnia previously (Basically Garmap with a Samsung skin) and this app is insanely better.

I can't really picture buying the TomTom HD live traffic package just yet, you can just go to the TomTom web site and get the traffic updates for free before you leave and re-route to your destination. I know things can change while you're on the road but I'm quite sure it will be minimal.

Is the Garmin StreetPilot available with SA maps? Anyone tested it yet?

I use the TomTom app daily and I also have the HD Traffic service. What a fantastic service. For those complaining about the battery, I got a USB car charger from Look and Listen for R99 and a universal screen mount for R109. Well worth every cent I paid for it.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will probably get the Tom Tom app. But before I do, a couple of questions:

1. How is the street information organised? Do I have to know the town before I search for a street address, or will it search all possible addresses in the various towns? This is where NDrive is a complete fail.

2. How quickly does it lock onto a signal?

I'm looking into getting one of the Griffin charger/transmitter/hands free devices to use with my phone, so not too concerned about battery. Or would it be better to get the dedicated Tom Tom accessory?

Hi Pixual

When you start searching for your destination the first screen asks you what city to search in. What's nice is that you'll only have to search for the city once, after which you'll see a list of the cities you've searched below the search box.

With regards to how quickly it locks onto signal? It's quite quick, very quick (though this will vary depending on where you are at the time). Every single time I've used it the GPS locked on almost instantly (This could be due to the fact that the GPS is activated as soon as the app is launched which means it tries to find satellites while you're still busy searching for your destination).

Just to add to the Garmin StreetPilot query I had, it doesn't look like an option for us here in SA. The StreetPilot app doesn't come with the maps on the app itself, they are downloaded as required over 3G (just like Google Maps). This will drive your data bundles into oblivion every month.

That sounds very much like the way NDrive searches, which I completely hate.

More than once I have been unable to find places on NDrive because I have got the town/city wrong. Try navigating to Drakensberg resorts, for instance. What town does the Drakensberg Sun fall under? If you don't know, you're SOL.

When I had Garmin XT on my Nokia if I did a search for a street or suburb, it listed all the possible towns below it. I'm going to see if Garmin have an iPhone app. :(
