I'm having one hell of a fight here...

Purchased a used iPhone 3Gs (16gb) for my wife today. It is currently running iOS3.1.3, and is jailbroken. Since she has an iPad running 4.0.1, I would like to upgrade the 3Gs so the OS is the same (groups, etc.).

So far, I have:

1. Downloaded the ipsw for 4.0.1 from Apple
2. Tried a straight restore in iTunes (by holding shift, clicking on restore and selecting the ipsw)
3. Tried to do the same in Recovery Mode

Every time, the software extracts fine, iTunes says it is preparing the phone for the restore, then it verifies the firmware with Apple and then I get an error that says the process cannot proceed, with error code 3194.

I've searched high and low on the web, and learnt a lot of things. Also tried a lot of things, such as changing my hosts file (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate) to reflect the Cydia server, in order to bypass Apple's servers. But I always get the same bloody error.

Can anybody help here please?

I have the exact same problem, mine is stuck on FW 4.0. cannot upgrade at all. Also bought phone 2nd hand on that FW. phoned supposed to be factory unlocked and wasn't jailbroken. You could try to update to 4.0 and used the jailbreakme.com website to jailbreak and unlock the phone. Try to backup your SHSH files with tiny umbrella before attempting any updates.

also 1394 error, even ttied Ireb still getting the same error. I assume you are running itunes 10.1 and not an older version?

@Primo, no, not on MWEB

BUT, I have made some progress. It turns out that Apple has stopped signing ALL retro firmwares - so at the moment you can only restore/update to 4.2.1. That is, unless you backed up your SHSH Blobs through Cydia, in which case there is a workaround or two.

In the end, I was forced to upgrade to 4.2.1 - now I'll just have to wait for an untether jailbreak to get here, as I really need to install MiWi on it, or PDANet as an alternative. Neither of which is on the App store, of course :(

In the mean time, I've now hit another obstacle: The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. This is using the SIM from my wife's Blackberry - so this could either mean that the phone was network locked, and unlocked by the previous owner (in which case I've now disabled his unlock!); or that (and this is my last hope) the Blackberry SIM doesn't work in the iPhone because of some BB specific things on the SIM. But the latter is unlikely, so now I'm looking to Unlock AND JB the wife's 3Gs. Gonna be a loooooong night at this rate!

@skymatrix..

i have read about the 4.2.1 disabling the unlock but lets hope for the best.. in any case an untethered jailbreak is on the way.. possibly in the next few days or weeks.. goodluck mate!

@SkyMatix, maybe it was my 1394 problem too, didn't want to upgrade past 4.1, otherwise one cannot jailbreak. Will probably stay on 4.0 until there more jb hack out for the later IOS versions, could only backup 4.2.1 SHSH files with tiny umbrella so don't want to upgrade now until there is more hacks out.

@Primo, yes I am using mweb, does MWEB somehow block the Itunes port?
Should I rather try my CellC connection with the PC?

@knersie, well personally i have countless errors when i tried to update to 4.2.1 using mweb. i switched pc's and used my 3g vodacom and it worked one time perfect..

The main reason you cannot install 4.0.1 is because apple does not sign it more (I assume that you got this far in your research)
Pointing your hosts files to cydia will only work if you saved your SHSH blobs for 4.0.1 on the Cydia servers WHILST apple still signed them. You can use either Cydia OR TinyUmbrella for this. Since you only bought the phone yesterday, you will only be able to store 4.2.1 on Cydia. Unfortunately, that is currently the ONLY version you can restore to. (I think Apple still signs 3.1.3 as well, but hey, 4.x is way better)My suggestion would be to wait until xmas, they promised to have an untethered JB for 4.2.1 by then, and then upgrade the phone and ipad to 4.2.1

You can jailbreak 3GS with RedSn0w all ready out and save you shah with Cydia then you can use ultrasn0w to unlock the phone on IOS 4.2.1
