Apart from removing the actual SIM card what is the best/simplest way to ensure the iphone is only using WIFI and not cellular?

Switching to Airplane mode and then enabling wifi from there? Or am I missing something obvious?

Thats the simplest way...

Why do you ask?
Because I'm cheap when it comes to paying vodacom's data rates. :o

Blackberry users are spoilt in comparison with the r69 unlimited plan.

if ur iphone has a wi-fi internet connection it should use it no matter what?
unless u cracked the phone

With a strong wifi connection I don't doubt that but if it drops out of range surely the 3G will kick in?

You can turn the 3G off... and of course remove the APN details.. that would stop it from using the cellular towers for data access...

Hi Bwana,

You can turn off 3G by going
Settings / General / Network then disable 3g however it will still use EDGE or GPRS when out of WiFI range or your network dies.

if you go to
Settings / General / Network/ Cellular Data / you can remove APN details as someone suggested however this will reset itself on your next hard reboot.

I also reccomend turning off "location services" which is a switch found under Settings / Genera. This saves considerable battery life and stops that annoying nag screen when you take a photo.

Alternatively you can stop being a cheap skate :p

I'll stick with airplane mode but thanks for the advice.

I already get essentially unlimited data on my blackberry so paying out of my butt for it on the iPhone doesnt make all that much sense yet. :)

it uses wifi first before 3G signals ... on your iphone there is a setting to "ask to join networks" ... make sure this is on ... that way whenever the phone picks up a wifi signal it will prompt and saves you from using your 3G...

If you are jailbroken and running Cydia, you can install SBSettings or BossPrefs. They allow you to turn 3G on/off.

not from what i understand, if u have wi-fi and a valid internet connection on it, it will always pick it over ur 3g

Yes - but my point/query was that if the phone loses the wifi signal then the 3g signal will be used. I'd rather it didnt ever use the cellular signal unless I expressly enable it.

I'm not really using it as an actual phone ATM so I dont need to have the phone part switched on all of the time - I'm basically using it as a iPod Touch more than a phone.

then why bother with a sim card at all? I guess then u have no choice but airplane mode or simless iphone...
In fact, why not flog the phone, get an i pod touch and use the spare cash on something else?

I have a spare account (4U contract) which I'm using in it while my current Balckberry account finishes out.

I like using the maps/google earth/itunes and other location based services which occasionally require a internet connection - if I'm not at home or in the office that means 3G (or a trip to the nearest McDs but my waistline might protest about that;)).

As I've already mentioned I love the phone however the Blackberry is still a better deal as far as data goes and that phone is linked to my current contract (free minutes etc). I'm also not going to ditch the iPhone in favour of another iPod. I've already got enough of them.

Yep Bwana, Choose Airplane mode and then switch wifi on.

But Wifi will always be used when on.

Thanks :)

Awesome phone BTW - I'll admit I was sceptical but after using it for just a few hours (should be a prerequisite for being able to pass judgement on any device imo) it was like a little switch flipped and all the initial awkwardness/confusion went away.
