120gb SSD and 55GB iPhoto library growing, what's the best solution here, move the library to external?

Replace the SSD with a larger one?

Those Samsung EVO's can be had in 512GB now for a decent price.

It is a bit silly that iPhoto wants to keep everything in one place.

Maybe put the current library on an external/backup and then start a brand new one?

External is always an option. As is maintaining multiple libraries.

If you don't like a managed library use a referenced one.

Do elaborate...

Are you referring to a symbolic linked/aliased folder ?

Oh okay I found this...

So much like iTunes then.

Personally I want iPhoto to manage everything, but it would be nice to say have everything from 2013, 2012, 2011 etc in "backup" folders on another drive and just keep my most recent stuff "live" if that makes sense.

In my case I just Cloud Sync everything to Copy.com but that won't work with the OP since he's got a local storage limitation and not a backup problem.

I sort of have the same problem. But if I move the library to my external it wants to start a new one every time I open iPhoto (or Aperture for that matter) just to do a import quickly.

Would like to have a external library and be able to do imports and have it move there automatically when I connect my external. Sigh. :(

I had the same problem when I still used a Macbook Air with 128GB SSD and iPhoto Library was 53GB so just moved it across to a 1TB external. Even now that I have upgraded to Macbook Pro with 256GB SSD I still keep the iPhoto library on external (USB 3.0 makes a huge difference here for loading folders) and have never had a single problem.
