He has been in incredible form in international T20s. Went through a spell where he was smashing everyone in ODIs as well, getting dominant hundreds for fun. I think it's time CSA technical team allow him to bat freely in Tests as well. This thing of having players like Amla, AB, JP & Bavuma (soon QdK too), in the Test XI - all of whom love to play their shots means only Elgar is naturally inclined to bat patiently. So they are trying to force Faf to do the opposite, and I don't think he can continue to resist and please them. The same may affect Stiaan. Doesn't bat as freely as the other but he's like Faf - better attacking than defending.

It can only get worse if Stiaan gets dropped and either Rilee or Reeza are picked to open.

Long term the loser will be Amla because he'll use his wrists less & less, cut out some of his more aggressive strokes and only go for the safe drives in order to add solidity alongside Elgar.

Some big names have been released by their franchises, for various reasons!!

To name a few: Yuvraj Singh, Angelo Mathews, Virender Sehwag, George Bailey, Aaron Finch, Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn, Kevin Pietersen, Ravi Bopara, Dinesh Karthik, Darren Sammy, Rilee Rossouw, Pat Cummins, Ryan ten Doeschate, Johan Botha

Are players entitled to the same salary as the previous year if they get retained?
Looking at Yuvraj I can see the business sense behind it. He was bought for a hefty sum but performed very poorly last year.

Id say injuries is another reason.

I'll also go for injuries and money (linked to poor form). They can release them and then bid for them at the auction for a lower price!!

Miller $1.865m is a fair price for him, Morriss $1.044m is very overpriced.

The lure of money is in the air.

An bets the most off the Saffers will almost certainly raise their game when playing IPL ????

Perhaps our International season should start after the IPL.... that case most players like AB and the like will have hit form playing the T20 circus.... and perhaps can carry through that when playing for the Proteas

I'm supporting the Supergiants for the first game .... :)
