Hi all,

A friend of mine borrowed my iTrip to test on her new iPod, and lost it ... so now it needs to be replaced.

Now here's the issue:
I am using an iTrip on my 30Gb Photo iPod (the tubular one at the top of the unit) and it works well ... this one I still have.
On my 60Gb Video iPod, I also use(d) an iTrip, but the newer digital ones, slotting in at the bottom of the iPod ... This one has been giving me endless problems, not so much faulty, but poor transmission, which in turn means crappy music in the car.

What are the available alternatives that you guys can recommend?

If your car radio has rca's at the back you can get rca to headphone socket cable and connect it that way. It also uses less power that way in my experience.

Luckily my car came with a built in socket for connecting an iPod.

I tweaked one of the old tubular ones when I got it and it was great - pity they're so hard to come across these days because I stepped on it a while back. :o

I've got the digital one now and havent had any problems. I read an article recently that removing the bee-sting aerial from my car would help and it did - not listening to the radio in PE is no tragedy :D

See if you cant run a cable into the back of the radio - that will always sound the best.

I remember the hack for the old ones ... never tried it as I don't need it on the old one ... there is a similar hack for the new ones, but the cable is running outside of the unit at the back. My cars don't have bee-stings ... window integrated aerials :(

The Landy's radio doesn't have RCAs at the back, so that ain't gonna help :(

Its odd that you didnt need the hack for the old one but do for the new - my new LCD is so much better than the old one.

Are you sure you're using a clean frequency and that the volume is pumped up to almost max? One thing I had to do was disable the volume limiter on my missus' ipod - it was preventing the iTrip from working properly.

I also found it quite strange ... I wanted to get the older one for the Video iPod, but it doesn't fit, so I had to go with the new one.

Volume limiter is disabled, and the frequency is "clean" ... I have the opportunity to try a different one now, so I am looking at a decent alternative

Just for the sake of it have you tried the LCD one with the iPod Photo? Does it sound any different?

I had the tubular iTrip on my 60GB Photo, but I needed to replace it for my RF remote (both attached on the top) so I bought the Monster FM tx, it's amazing in quality of output.

The only draw back is that you need a free ciggie lighter to use it (it get's power from the lighter and keeps the iPod charged). This does mean that it's limited to the car unless you can get a 12V DC with a female lighter socket attachment (i.e. make one).

The DC socket won't be a problem (had a couple of "extras" made when I still had the Defender). I am looking at either the Kensington or Monster units (both plug into the DC plugs)

You talking about this one: Monster iCarPlay Wireless Plus FM transmitter ?

Yep, that's the one. It's absolutely awesome compared to Griffin's stuff. The Kensington is, however, rated the best one available.

Hhm, I am sure I saw the Belkin one getting a better rating than Kensington on iLounge

The clarity also seems to differ between different types of car radio, on my wifes yaris its fairly decent in my subaru it plain ol sucks. Anyone else found this ? Or is it me just been daft.

@web, very true .... depends on the quality of the radio, and the distance to the aerial.

I reckon I will try out Belkin's TuneFM ... nice thing is you can remove the car charger, so you can still use it more portably, and not just in the car

I have the tube one from the iPod gen 2 days. It is rubbish though and never got it working well. Can some one tell me the "hack" you speak of as well as a good fequency to use in Durbs?
