WinXP does see the Ipod as a removable drive and you can freely copy files onto it. However, this will not allow the Ipod to play music. Those files are reorganised in a specific, proprietary and unintuitive manner.

Xplay (and some other 3rd party apps) allows you to copy files across as though iTunes had done it, what's more you can browse your iPod and copy/delete/edit/play off the iPod any file or files. The files are later visible in iTunes too, although the sync feature may delete them if they
are not in your iTunes library already.
Go to www.ipodlounge.com , look up the applications section and browse
for either a free Xplay alternative or get the Xplay trial.
