iPod nano Problem.

WinXP does see the Ipod as a removable drive and you can freely copy files onto it. However, this will not allow the Ipod to play music. Those files are reorganised in a specific, proprietary and unintuitive manner.

Xplay (and some other 3rd party apps) allows you to copy files across as though iTunes had done it, what's more you can browse your iPod and copy/delete/edit/play off the iPod any file or files. The files are later visible in iTunes too, although the sync feature may delete them if they
are not in your iTunes library already.

Go to www.ipodlounge.com , look up the applications section and browse
for either a free Xplay alternative or get the Xplay trial.

should the ipod not be opened by the pc as a usb drive..I recall my mp3 player having that option.Although i had to go into the device manager to set it up...mpc mode or something...??

Many other players (eg Cowon) allow you to just that under WinXP/2K or Vista and under Mac OSX (and prolly under Linux too). Apple chose not to implement a friendly way of copying files, the way Creative did with their media manager. I'm no fan of Creative as a company but their Zen Vision
is a brilliant product and the software is far more intuitive than that of
the iPod (which is a pity and a PITA).

The absolute best way to go is to use a music system (ie iTunes, Winamp, Amorak, MusicMonkey) and sync it that way.
