IPS panel - are they that affordable now?

right,

so we all usually buy LCD/LED backlit... but there is no question that IPS panels are superior in every aspect.

The last time I checked they were around 5k for a medium sized screen, but look at this

That is very affordable considering the closest I could find is a HP 24" for R6500 :eek:

These are entry eIPS LCD screens using LED back-lighting, 6-bit + AFRC panels. While they are much better than TN LCD, they aren't true 8-bit IPS LCD like Dell/HP's for R6k.
 
I have both a U2711 and a U2311, one is S-IPS and one is e-IPS, and the difference between them is undetectable, even by my eagle eyes. I got the U2311 foe about R2100, and it is worth every cent. Its response time is not much worse than my "2ms" TN panel (hint - Samsung 2ms >>>>>>>>waylongerthan>>>>>>>>> Real life 2ms).

Pity you cant get U2311s anymore...

Which panel have you got (TFT Central). Afaik some 23" are 8 bit, some of the 6 bits are better than others, etc. There are a few different 23" panels from LG.

Also Dell and HP etc. are factory calibrated adding to their increased cost (and colour accuracy). Think U2310 is around R1k more than the cheaper 23"ers.

This is the interesting part - according to the datasheets, the 23" is 8bits/color, but the 27" is 10bits/color... Either one is great, though.

They both use advanced Frame Rate Control to emulate higher colour depth than their panels can do natively. FRC is, very crudely, changing the colour every frame to make it look like a mix between the two colours.

LM230WF2 is a 6-bit panel, with aFRC to emulate 8-bit.

Yeah, that is more or less what I thought. But the point was - color-wise there is very little between the two of them. Definitely not enough to justify the price difference between eIPS and H-IPS. The difference between either of them and any TN panel, is HUGE, though.

I decided to try order a newer Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM from Xpand-IT. The price was about R2300, off the top of my head, and it's just fantastic. The ergonomics are great in terms of height adjust and tilt. It can also rotate 90 degrees if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't do photo editing or anything but I constantly notice just how tasty it is because I run it in dual screen with my old ****ty Samsung.

EDIT: I know it's easy to get caught up in reviews about small differences in colour or stuff. I'd say that unless the review is along the lines of "pretty underwhelming" you should be safe. If you need better, be prepared to pay a LOT more. At this price point I really couldn't be happier.

I got the LG IPS, switched from a normal tft, and I cant believe the difference. The major change was a much more linear display of colours. Considering its not that much more than a TFT, id rekon its worth it. If anything, you get the really good viewing angles.
 
Ok quick question on the same line: If you were going to choose between a 120hz panel OR an ips panel, which would you prefer?

They are all TFT tech, so careful of terminology used. :) Best to refer as your shweet IPS LCD to cheap schitte TN LCD...

For gaming, nothing beats 120Hz, so if your primary focus is gaming, that would be the best choice. IPS beats TN in every other aspect IMO.

IPS ofc. If you've never needed 120Hz/3D you never fill. I'm quite happy with 60FPS. :p

LG 23" IPS and 23" 3D are similar in price, try get both and sell the one you don't like hehe.

Aren't you forgetting the response time?
How is it better for gaming, unless you're meaning 3D gaming?
 
120hz is MUCH better for gaming. No 60fps cap. Smoothness off the charts.

I forget, is that 120Hz where it takes 60Hz and adds its bits to give 120Hz?

Or does it mean your graphics card can actually exceed 60Hz.

Thought input was limited to 60Hz. Or was that just most 3D TV's.
