IPWireless Modem Replacement Battery

The battery on my modem decided to resign and I struggled like crazy to get another one. It turns out the battery is the same as that used on a Nokia 7250 cell phone (650mAh, 3.7V Li-ion) and I only found one at MZ Cell in Westgate. Every other cell provider's shops gave me a "huh" look. This is for the new style modem without the antenna sticking up. I know there are only 3 other MiWi customers out there, and chances are one day their batteries may go phut too, so can the mods maybe make this a sticky??

I am pretty sure the problem with my modem is that it isn't picking up the IP address from my modem. I can get internet hardwired through my modem. But, I don't want that because I have a laptop. What is the problem?

Are you aware that the modem works with OR WITHOUT the battery?

Besides, those batteries don't do much except for swelling up until it bulges the battery compartment panel - I have never seen any of these batteries power a Sentech modem for longer than 20 minutes in the event of a mains power failure.

I'm interested to know: Why did you spend money on it?

Easy, I bought a laptop awhile back and like to lay in bed and do my email when the weather in JHB becomes lightning city so that I cant use my desktop. I used it without its battery for quite some time anyway, and one day I expect I will have to give it back to Geendraad who are liable to have 10000 puppies because it was not in the exact same condition as when I got it 3 years back. Its bad enough I have lost its box!!!

Do you actually get more than a few minutes of battery life? (If not, then wouldn't a surge protector that you can plug any power adaptor into be a better buy?)

Not to worry, they will NEVER EVER ask you for its return. They are scrapping their retail services during their current financial year, so sometime during 2009 the MyWireless(TM) service will disappear in its entirety.

So, why not convert to a reasonable ADSL package instead? (Or, if you're not living in an ADSL area, they might offer you WiMax - or even this: http://www.telkom.co.za/common/aboutus/mediacentre/pressrelease/articles/article_967.html)

Surely you can get better value for money outside of Geendraad's realm?

Until such time as geendraad and sentech leave me I wont leave them in too much of a hurry. I am actually very happy with my coal burning account. (I have 10G to flush away every month). I couldnt try the modem on my laptop because the modem's battery went bleh when I wanted to.
As for DSL... if I didnt live in rental accomodation and telkom wasnt so utterly useless at anything I would have applied for DSL, but with them its a case of having to take pot luck as to if there is a line available, when they will install it, if it actually works, or the tech looses the key or something equally common to all the excuses telkom usually uses for shoddy service. Wimax is an option, but once again, Telkom's service record speaks for itself.
I live in hope that one day Neotel will get coverage in my area (100 years?) and will get them if I can, but until then.......

Oh, and as for Iburst? they would be the last option I would try. Their reputation, and their accounts dept's reputation speak for themselves.

Sentech, Iburst wharra wharra... same thing in the end really, crappy speeds, even crappier sevice and a fat bill at the end of the month for the NOTHING they have done for you all month!!!

Ahhh - thought I would pop over the to the myWireless forums for old times sakes. Amazing that there are still people using MyWireless but as some have said R499 for 10GB is good value and if you don't need huge speed, then it works well.

Unimpressed, I am afraid that you cannot compare Sentech with iBurst. Leagues apart. iBurst is WAAAAAYAYAAAAY better than Sentech. Granted their accounts department has had its problems but these are getting less commonplace. Coverage is MUCH better, speeds are MUCH better, support is MUCH better, stability is MUCH better etc. Provided that signal is adequate, I have NO hesitation in recommending iBurst. The same cannot be said for MyWireless.

Back in the day when we had around 800 users on Sentech, we had several calls a day with issues. With iBurst we get perhaps 1 or 2 calls a week and usually these are temporary issues or user errors.

I would still recommend ADSL over iBurst BUT ADSL packages are limited, access to the ADSL service is limited and getting a line takes a while. So iBurst works in this situations.
