New electronic reader

Dutch company IREX Technologies, a spinoff of Royal Philips Electronics, unveiled a new electronic reader for the US market, the latest entrant in an increasingly crowded field.

I've been looking at ebook readers for a while now. Either they're ridiculously expensive or they lock you into a service provider or network that's not available in good ole ZA. This one certainly looks good, it will have international roaming so we might finally be able to buy books online. But at $400? Eish.

I've ordered the Cooler eReader (www.coolreaders.com) - they look pretty good, and are going for $299 (although I seem to have been charged $269) which includes shipping to SA.

Can't comment on the quality, as yet, but I'm hoping that it's better than my Sony PRS-505, which developed a screen fault after a few months.

I have been reading ebooks on my sony x1 for months now.. luckily I have 20/20 vision so its not uncomfortable or difficult to read at all, but I can see the need for a slightly bigger screen.

In a world proactively trying to protect trees and reduce emmissions .. I cant believe these things arent cross subsidised and used in schools and much cheaper and more popular. I cant remember when last I read a paperback novel.

I applaud any edition to the mobile reader market.. just wish their were more to choose from at good prices, so I could buy 2 for my folks.
