I got a prepaid sim from Vodacom which is surely a recycled number and I keep getting irritating SMS's about lightning. Got 8 of them yesterday. It normally reads something like this or similar:

"Lightning RED Alert: ALL Zones. Execute section Lightning TARP for code RED."

Now you would think the easy thing is to just block the number, but that won't work as it's from a different long ass 15-digit +27 number every single time.

I initially went back to Vodacom and they said sorry, can't help. In the meantime I got a Capitec sim and ported the number over, for what it's worth.

How the F can these assholes sell a recycled number with all this BS attached to it and how can I get rid of these constant annoying incoming messages?

Maybe one of the testers that used random numbers on their platform to test will see the message and pm you.

Have the same experience with the prepaid sim I bough from Voda as well.
Also used to get a person's clothing account sms's and calls looking for her as well.

Had something similar for a clothing store, used to ask them to take note this number doesn't belong to the person anymore. I have given up, now when they phone, I tell them, she is just in the change room of the clothing store trying on more clothes and she says I must tell them they can't do anything to her since she buying the new clothes cash and she is now a member of legalwise.

Its common knowledge that prepaid sims have been reycled..hence its so cheap.

Block sms based on keywords. Thats the most effective way

Doesn't matter if prepaid or not, issue is the limit for 10 digit phone numbers when can only be certain prefixes.

I'm still mostly confused why South Africa hasn't followed what a lot of the rest of the world is doing and moving to 11/12 digit phone numbers, @Jan might be an interesting chat with ICASA (let me rephrase, why no plan with deadlines that are always missed was announced).

Both contract and prepaid numbers gets recycled. And a prepaid number can become a contract number and visa versa. The SMS coming through to you from that long number sounds like it is a telemetry device monitoring something and sendingreportd. There is nothing Vodacom can do about that. The person in charge of that device needs to change the settings on the device not send messages to your prepaid number. When a number gets recycled all RICA and WASP content services are removed. This is not that and is out of Vodacom's control.

It doesn't matter who you port the number over to, you will still receive the same smses. That's because the smses have nothing to do with the current network provider you're with. They are being sent to a specific cellphone number and will receive those smses no matter who the number is ported to.

I know. I didn't do it in the hopes of getting rid of the problem btw. Just cause Capitec's data bundles are so cheap.
