I find this pathetic download speed around 290mb an hour on a 4096kb fibre line

Can someone advise what to do since the IS guys did indictae that due to the SAT3 failure things should normalize from Monday. Is it True.

Firstly and this is just IMO - when the fsck did fibre get classed as 4096k?

I would think that fibre does way more than that?

Secondly - you got residential fibre? :wtf:
Who is providing you with this so called fibre?

which ISP are you using.

I am on the OpenWeb Uncapped Express which uses the IS fibre link and the IS backbone is running at full speed for me. So it must be something else wrong. Let's try and diagnose it.

it is business adsl IS Fibre 4096k with static IP @ around +- R 3200 pm
testing it at home since during the week the speeds were much lower.

My Line is synching at 4096kb

Durban to New York

237.8 KB/s download
26.3 KB/s upload

Durban to JHB

385.5 KB/s download
22.1 KB/s upload

What do i do and tell IS about this - they have provided me with the billion router

During the week it performed the following:

JHB to DBN
55.1 KB/s download
46.3 KB/s upload

JHB to JHB

67.3 KB/s download
48.8 KB/s upload

Please advise what I can do & diagnose this so I can enjoy the full benefit of the line, I will extremely appreciate anyones assistance.

OK, can you run some more tests.

First do an FTP test. Install a download manager that will allow you to see the download speed (like Getright).

Then grab a file from an international FTP site and then grab one from a local FTP site.

Then do a Usenet test... sign up with a free service on an international news server like Giganews. Download an NZB and do a download. (Instructions here...http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/blog.php?b=566)

With both of these tests you should max out at 420 KB/s.

Maybe instead of getright use Orbit Downloader, which at least is free and doesn't infest your pc with spyware like some getright versions do.

it is maxing at 420kb downloading from international seems ok with this - will try during the week as well...

Thanks a Lot for your assistance

Please note that IS Business ADSL Fibre is not fibre, it's simply what they call the ADSL product to signify that all international traffic is carried on Fibre as opposed to standard uncapped business which runs a lot of traffic over satellite.

500GB on a 4MB Uncapped can pull down close to 1.2TB of data per month if your line syncs at 4096k.
i get close to 320GB on a 1MB Uncapped which i recently cancelled - contract completed :)
