Is 600 kw/h a month normal

Haven't bothered to figure out what circuit goes with what...all I know is that it passed CoC by an electrician I trust.

Plus I'm bouncing soon anyway...so its not worthwhile investigating it for me.

Ja no leave it alone then because if you cant see I was talking about the wall plug itself where you plug stuff in... ;)

Look, I've been reading up on-line (can only be the absolute truth right :)) and diesel generators appear to be more robust, longer lasting in terms of mechanics, and actually give more electricity in terms of cost per liter. As for mobility - I'm looking for a solid unit for my house. The less mobile the better I reckon - especially when you consider crime rates these days.

They are definitely cheaper to run... but the initial cost is big.
 
As soon as you have a house rather than an apartment/townhouse things seem to get out of hand. Plus PTA price structure is far more forgiving (zero fixed...just per unit)

I'm guessing you're running aircons/heating though? If I switch on my underfloor heating it nukes the bill too.
Ye - 2 aircons. But I really try to use them sparingly. I only switch on when we can't take the heat/cold anymore.

I have a kWh meter that sits in my home office. Going to take a journey around the house this weekend, socket by socket, measuring what pulls what. Hoping to gain a bit of insight.

True story.
My first genny (2.5kVa) was stolen in broad daylight during the 2008 crisis. They kicked in my pedestrian gate and disappeared with it.
Replaced with a 5.5 and hidden on the other side of my property now.

I was thinking of getting that meter, then looked online they say it is not very accurate as it does not measure the current volatge and power factor, si it could be more than 10% out.

After what I was quoted today for a solar panel system; trust me in that a diesel standby generator looks like an absolute bargain. And that's talking about R20k - R30k to install a monster diesel generator.

I hear you. I have decent security these days - as long as there is electricity. If not - well, come in and help yourself....
 
I presume Eishkom is taking into account the loss of revenue every 2 1/2 hours the electrics is off every day of the whole country...
 
We use about 200 Units per a month, we have a prepaid meter... We also have a printing company which runs for 20 hours a day with heat guns and many, many large heating equipment.

We switch our geyser on, only when we are going to use it, which is in the morning only.
 
Keep in mind that a DSTV decoder uses exactly the same amount of power (30-40W) in standby mode than when switched on. Tested this with a wattmeter. So put your TV, DSTV decoder and other AV equipment on a multi-adaptor with its own power switch to easily switch off at night.
 
Use around 300 here. I live alone, not at home during the day. Have 2 PC's (one is a low powered Atom box) that run 24/7.
 
We use around 450 units a month. Normal size home. 2 of us. But that includes aircon / heater usage (almost daily now with CT summer heat and winter), and all the other good stuff, router, wifi AP, GB switch, CCTV camera's, geyser, lights, pc, laptops, chargers, tv etc etc.
 
Our average usage is 420 kWh per month. A prepaid elec meter was installed before we bought the house.

Only two of us are in the house, with two geysers, but only one is used unless we have guests staying with us.

We don't have luxuries such as underfloor heating for winter, but we do use an split-unit aircon in the bedroom for an hour or so when it's very hot, before we go to bed at night, just to cool the room down.

I replaced our 4-plate electric stove hob with a LPG gas hob a couple of years ago, and that alone saved quite a lot of electricity cost.

I have a small (20Kl) swimming pool that I run for about 3 - 4 hours in summer, much less in winter. Many say that a pool should be filtered for, say, 8 to 10 hours a day, but I reckon it has nothing to do with time, but rather how many times the pool water is circulated through the filter. So, with a smallish 20 Kl pool, and a 0.75Kw pump, I can get away with the 3 to 4 hours per day

We use 600Kwh per month, and interestingly enough, its pretty consistent - 20 units per day
