Is an SSD worth it?

Also installed my Corsair Force GT last night.. It's blazing fastest MUFASA! Mwah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! :D
 
Just make sure it aligns the SSD partitions when doing a clone.
Beginning of last year when I get my first SSD I wanted to use Acronis but at the time it did not support re-aligning of the partitions (if I remember correctly).
If the partitions are not correctly aligned you can end up with up to 50% loss of performance.
 
I didn't even bother with cloning it. . . Installing Windows and all my apps was so damn quick, it was actually fun. :D

Probably the RAM befoe the MB... people ted to skimp on this pretty important piece of hardware and spend TONS on a new machine and a couple of hundred on a 2GB RAM module!! Then wonder why it doesn't seem faster than what they upgraded from! hahahaha
 
Its just a pity that an Intel 520 SSD costs as much in America as a Corsair force 3 here, but the Intel is 50% more over here...

That still only means we're paying 15% more, since the premium of the 520 over the Force 3 is 35% in the US: $170 vs $230 for 120GB on Amazon. The 520 is priced a fair deal higher than other SF-based 6Gb/s drives.

I think that it is probably currently priced higher due to it being new and probably limited stock being brought in, considering it is cheaper than the 510 in the states, yet more expensive over here. I'd give it a while to see if the prices comes down, but it will still be higher due to Intel's pricing. It just depends if you think it is worth it for the custom firmware and additional QA.
 
Yeah, I think I'm going to wait 2-3months and see if I can afford an Intel 520 180gb or an Ocz Octane 256gb. But I'd really rather get the Intel, they have a fraction of the number of failures of the others...
 
I think the issue is exacerbated by the fact that no-one in SA brings in Crucial drives, which allow trading off the speed of SF drives for greater reliability, at the same price point. At least, from the word around, the M4 seems to be very good in the reliability stakes.

At the moment, if you want high reliability at 6Gb/s, then your only choices seem to be Intel and Intel (not sure about Corsair's Marvell drives, though, but I suspect they aren't anything special, reliability wise, and I wouldn't chance a new Indilinx drive until they're been on the market for a while and proven themselves).

Never do cloning. Fresh install will always be the best option

Got an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB yesterday and installed it last night. Quite a difference :)

Windows 7 is super quick, it seems as if apps open faster than I can click on them.

Having said that though I am not sure if it is worth R1900... Also now every other machine I work with feels terribly slow :(
 
Think of it this way. Is there any other upgrade you can make on your pc that gives you the same speed bump?

I didn't see the 120GB Vertex 3, only the 120GB Agility 3 and I'd rather pay R100 more to buy from a place where I don't have to jump through hoops to buy and then struggle when it comes to warranty issues.

Basically it's to do with partition alignment. It can be fixed after installation though (with the help of an ubuntu live disk, or gparted or something similar). The link below also has a migration section or just google for one there are lots of guides

Here's a very useful thread on overclock.net with regards to ssd's and windows 7. It's very nice for reference but I don't do have the stuff personally!
My checklist for ssd's and windows

1. Check the partition is aligned
2. Check trim is enabled
3. Check disk Defragmenter doesn't include your ssd
4. Turn off hibernation and drive indexing
5. Disable Prefetch and Superfetch
6. Redirect my docs, downloads etc to data drive

They're in order of importance in my opinion
 
Apparently the new Acronis supports partition aligning when coming to an SSD.

I did a simple windows system image in Win7. I restored the image to my Vertex 3 and it did it perfectly.
