Is anyone else experiencing speed improvement?

It would appear that something has been changed overnight.

I have a 128K package connected to Hurlyvale Tower.

Yesterday and for the past month plus, the forum international speed test was giving me around 14kb/s (ie half the speed of a 28.8 dialup modem) and while surfing internationally, pages were taking from 90 to 120 seconds to render! International file downloads were still reasonable at 10-12 kB/s using DownloadPlus with 4 sessions. Also winMTR showed packet losses of up to 50% from all routers that Internet Solutions in New York were using.

For the past hour or so, results are as follows:

Forum international speed test 128.2 kb/s
Page rendering 5-15 seconds
File download 12.6 kB/s
Packet loss (USA) ZERO!

Keith,

They definately did do something overnight - I got disconnected at 04:22 and reconnected at 05:39. From pings it looks like they have brought backhaul sat bandwidth on-line. All pings are currently ±350ms (with 20% packet loss). ±300ms is the minimum time when using sat for backhaul.

I did a speed test at 06:30 and got 25.78 kBps international (256k package). However, since it looks like the network was taken down, lots of users are probably not conected at the moment, so lets give it a few hours. In my experience, once everyone reconnects, things go for a ball of ****.

(EDIT) Bandwidthplace.com speed test shows a wopping 49.1 kbps (6.1 kBps) at 07:20. Single thread http download from download.com now only getting 12.05 kBps. There it goes...

Yep - speed is better here - but who gives a toss.

It's happened before. This is the first time in 3 weeks I'm getting an international single stream download at over 4k per second.

Don't expect it to last. It never has in the past.

Same here on Tower 116 La Montagne, Pretoria - flying at full speed (about 120kbps from MyASDL speed test) at 5am this morning (128k package). For a change, I could actually use my internet connection early this morning to do some useful work. Now it is back to the normal sub-analog modem speeds - 19.90kbps at 09h30.

A number of towers were down until now

Probably why the speed was good

Wireless2, you may well be right but I suspect that some testing of the "Bandwidth Throttling/choking" or to be more politically correct "Bandwidth miss Management" was taking place (like maybe being disabled - Is that possible while still maintaining the 128k limit? I wonder).

International (USA) web pages are rendering in 70-120 seconds again instead of 5-15 seconds and I.S New York packet loss at the point they connect to what seems to be AT&T is back at 30-50%.

This is costing me a lot of time/money.

20 screens take say 30 minutes (instead of 3 minutes) at a direct cost of my time a nominal cost of say R250/hour adds up to a lot of cash!

I certainly have to use more 80 screens a day in my business.

As I thought, back to snail paced speed again - typical.
Only 2 more weeks to go of this **** - thank god for that.

So, we all got a little "speed wobble" this morning - thanks aufully sentech !

Just cancel - best way to make um suffer.

But you shouldn't have to be up so early to use 24/7 internet!

2004-11-17 01:00:25 EST: 26 / 31 = 8:01 ZA
Your download speed : 27113 bps, or 26 kbps.
A 3.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 32562 bps, or 31 kbps.

Looks like it was a 2 hour test at Sentech. International b/w back to 1/2 a 28.8kbs modem. I wonder if they are experimenting with their 'bandwidth damager' for short periods in the morning.
Surely this proves that that should turf the dumb thing out

10 minutes later and I am back up to 129.6kb/s and zero packet loss in New York (Internet Solutions / AT&T)

bleh they did something this morning at 5:45 sometime.. my local pings have now gone to the dogs! They suck! they sucked before (but playable) but now its really bad!! AARGGHH

Yes - I'm experiencing MASSIVE speed improvements !

oh wait, I suddenly realised, I'm at work on the ADSL line !

Ahh, what joy it will be to return home with the prospect of relaxing and surfing at 28.8 modem speeds - the only option is to get horribly drunk so I don't notice.

Smellkom should be calling me tommorrow about home ADSL - too early to say whether I'll be able to get it or not or whether it'll be installed tommorrow.

If I can't get ADSL ? - hmmm, back to dialup and R7 call me thinks ?

Cancel my Sentech Cancellation - no F'ing way [:D]

If they keep up these speeds, I will bow down to my modem every night at sunset.

And if they don't I will kick the shyte out of it:)

well, I can't say much for speeds, but something definitely happened today, see https://dorris.no-ip.com:441/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi?target=Europe.BBC
the thing to notice is how Latency to europe was averaginh 1 second, until 5ish today, when international latecy dropped to average at 400ms.
There was also a considerable difference in us, but local remained the same. .

Seeing as I have this weird motto claiming, "if its working, it must need more hacking" (possibly a motto most tech happy people stick to, always trying to make it a little better) the link above is broken, i buggered up the ppp-on script this morning, will fix it tonight when I get back home!

Looks like they are playing again on the system - Just got 145.5 kbps on the int speed test and once again zero packet loss using winMTR to trace to my USA based servers

dorris, I like the look of smokeping that you have installed on smoothwall! Very impressive

Don't see a change here .. getting same old full local, 2KB/s international.

they're fixing it 'cos I'm not a customer anymore! bastards! I KNEW it! LOL!

Oh well, I wouldn't look back at Sentech anyway... I've wasted enough time and money on them. Good riddance!

Setting up my iBurst tonight [:)]

Good luck guys, I really hope it works out.
