Is broadband 256 Kbps?

Some people say that a car with an enigine smaller than 2L is not a sports cars - yet there are plenty of 1.6L hot hatches around.

What it boils down to is what they plan to use it for. If you are gonna be surfing wikipedia then 256kbps is fine. If you want to stream online video you will need at least 1mbps for SD quality.
 
I did a Wikipedia search for "what is the standard speed for broadband" and this is what I got:

Yup - sounds right - wouldn't be surprised if the Wiki Entry was the key bullet point / research quoted on the presentation by the junior staff member to the DoC Senior Management whose PA's still print their email for them because they don't know how to deal with these new-fangled computer things with electronic mail and blueteeth and internet tubes and stuff (I mean, the world moves so fast nowadays who can keep up).
 
I think it has got to do with Access, and not the Quality of the line speed. Provide as any people access to information at low cost (translated to minimum high speed internet). Much like minimum spec needed to run Windows, or any other software--does not mean, high end machines are not supported.--caters for everyone I guess.

Cellphones with 3G = 384kbps
Lowest ADSL line speed = 384kbps

Anything lower is not broadband right now in SA IMHO.

Anything on a 3G phone IS NOT BROAD ... It's merely band. If it cannot sustain an average of 1Mbps down - IT IS NOT BROAD. That means the supply has to be 4Mbps or even 8Mbps in order to sustain that.

Britons are not getting the broadband services they are being sold, research by the regulator Ofcom suggests.

Its analysis of broadband speeds in the UK shows that, for some services, 97% of consumers do not get the advertised speed.

It also shows a growing gap between the claims ISPs make for broadband and the speed being delivered.

To fix the problem, Ofcom is revamping the code of conduct for ISPs and asking for changes to how broadband is sold.
"We do want to see clearer advertising and we make no secret about that," he said. "We want advertising that is more meaningful to the consumer."

Looks like I'm not the only one that wants to experience the broad in order for me to call it broadband. Maybe they should be prevented from advertising "up to" and start advertising "not less than" ... (no body wants to be known as the slowest snail in the race, maybe then we can get some real competition going in the service delivery space.)
 
Simple really, DoC is protecting Telkom from spending money to upgrade their network capacity and technology. Thereby protecting Gov's part of the profits. Those Americans taught them well.
 
There is no need to care what the government decides "is" broadband if the government doesn't have its hand in providing it (well lack thereof).

My question: Is the DoC really aware of this or are they technologically set back somehow? If the answer is duh! of course they are aware then obviously there is a hidden agenda which can be proven if they cannot properly justify their claim. If not then they are inept. I think either of these two answers can motivate appropriate action by the public or other authorities on these matters as a disservice to the country? Surely? :confused:

I mean if I start a company that has huge negative impact on the economy even indirectly so then surely something can and will be done about it whether or not it is regarded as an essential service?

Of course my own interests are not that of business :D which is beside the point. I just want faster Internet at cheaper prices :p
 
"What is broadband?"

Broadband is what Telkom, as our sole DSL fixed leased-line provider in SA, compares themselves to internationally. Telkom claims that they are making use of world-class technology and that they provide-world class services, as well as world-class connectivity for both businesses and residential users.

If we compare apples to apples, then Telkom is pitting South Africa against the entire European Union, America and countries in Asia such as Japan, China and Korea.

Discounting Japan, China and Korea, given their propensity to provide up to 100mbps services as a standard product for residential use, we look at the USA and countries such as the UK specifically.


In the UK, you currently pay up to around 50 pounds for ~100gb of bandwidth with no AUP/FUP on an 8mbit downstream, 448kbps upstream connection.
That comes to a max of R570, with most services being below this upper limit.

The equivalent for only the connection in South Africa (until 8mbps/10mbps properly launches) is our 4mbps service, which comes at a minimum cost of R550 before you even have your ISP account; so if we had to combine two of these together to get 8mbps we'd pay R1,100 before ISP account.
This is also of course assuming that you are getting a special bundle from Telkom via their DoBroadband product range, which is a contract. To make matters worse, the Do Broadband site is now geared towards those with faster connections; imagine being a 3G user and burning up your data or a dialup user and waiting an eternity just to go view their products.

This is for a FiOS connection, a technology that, based on the fact Telkom recently rolled out fiber optic networking across SA, we could technically have in our homes if they'd distribute the funds they milk from us properly. Obviously even in the US, this kind of connection is subject to availability, so let's look at Cable instead, the staple broadband connection for American Home Users.

To put that into perspective:
1.5mbps equivalent uncapped in USA vs SA
$25 for 1.5mbps uncapped (R183) vs R550 ($75) for an up-to 4mbps service with a 5gb cap, R550+R540 for an up-to 4mbps uncapped account (R1,090 or $148)

15mbps
$43 for 15mbps uncapped (R315) vs R2,062 for 4mbps minimum, up-to 16mbps maximum connection consisting of four lines, with a 20gb combined cap or R2,062+(4*R540) for uncapped (R4,222 or $575)

30mbps
$63 for 30mbps uncapped (R440) vs R4,125 for 8mbps minimum, up-to 32mbps maximum connection consisting of eight lines with a 40gb combined cap or R4,125+(8*540) for uncapped (R8,445 or $1,152)


Now, it's easy to say "yes but you shouldn't be comparing what they pay because of yada yada yada".
Why shouldn't you say that? Because Telkom doesn't. In fact, Telkom says exactly the opposite. Telkom tells you, not asks you to believe, tells you as a matter of fact, that they are on the forefront of broadband technology. That they are using world-class equipment and protocols. That they provide the fastest connections (maybe in South Africa, where even that is not true, but most definitely not in the world). That they provide the most affordable connectivity (again, maybe in South Africa, but most certainly not in the world).


It's a simple fact that for some business-critical applications, it is cheaper for companies that need to transmit massive amounts of data, such as raw footage for a television show or film, that it is both cheaper AND faster for them to purchase four hard-drives, place the footage onto each of those hard-drives providing them with backups, and then to put a person on a plane to fly to the country it needs to get to to deliver it in person. That's return ticket, economy class.


So that's what 'broadband' is. What the rest of the world tells us it is. Because that's what Telkom tells us it is. Because Telkom is our major leased-line provider (if not only one worth mentioning) in South Africa, and because Telkom says that they are providing technology on par with the rest of the world at 'affordable' (read: on par with the rest of the world) rates.

Well this going to be more of an argument open for interpretation. We could easily just take the world average rate of data transfer and justify that as being the standard for broadband.

*cough* you need to do a bit of shopping around then. may well have changed in the last 2 years, but the guy I lived with had a TRUE uncapped 24meg line for 33 pounds a month, add in 11pounds for the phone, gives you 44pounds.

now he has upgraded to a 50meg fibre line. dont know what hes paying for it though

Depends on the definition. In my book anything 2Mb/s and higher is broadband.
 
What I think broadband is, does not matter. What is average download speeds overseas? 256 kbps download is pathetic in my view. That is not broadband. Forget about streaming videos and playing games online with that type of line speed!

Nothing less than 2 mb per second! That is broadband thank you very much.
 
by 2019 100mbs will be the global standard

Define global? The whole world? I doubt it, the majority of the planet don't even have normal internet access, be it dial-up, isdn or adsl at this stage.
