Is HD-PVR decoder worth it

hijack

guys so with the xrtraview included in the R65 will i get an HD feed to the second HD tv ?

i currently have the SD decoder that everyone is apparently after

I believe you'll need a second HD PVR to get HD channels on a second TV. I am also not 100% sure if you pay R65 twice (for PVR and XtraView)

I'm very much against the additional R65 and from what I've posted on the DStv forums, I have not received a concrete reason why it should be necessary for us to have to pay this (other than some vague reason about more call center staff and a better billing system, ROFLMAO). The R594 subscription must include all royalties as they're broadcasting the content, regardless of whether you pause it or watch it outside of the scheduled time.

The HD feed is only available on the HDMI port of the HD-PVR, so only the TV the it's connected to will receive the HD channels.

is there anyway of feeding this to the second TV?

or do i need to get to HD PVR`s

HDMi over CAT6 extender with HDMi loop through... This will split the HDMi feed to the near TV and extend a CAT6 line to the far TV, with a receiver turning it back into HDMi.

Otherwise, 2 way HDMi splitter, with a long HDMi cable (up to 20m) to far TV.

If you want to watch different programs in HD on the two screens, you will have to Xtraview two HD decoders.

Its defn worth it.
I actually have 2 HD PVR's, just for upscaling and on demand.
Its esp. useful in the room when i dont want to get up early in the morning but my daughter does, so i put on repeats of teletubbies and she is glued.

ok so the easier option is to get a 2nd HD PVR decoder

There's no additional cost for HD it's already included in the Premium subscription, the additional R65 is for Xtraview only

I think it is worth it.

DSTV is very expensive but for an extra R65 you get:

  • 5 extra channels in HD
  • Xtraview
  • The ability to record a program while watching another.
  • Live TV pause capability

What annoys me is that you cannot even pause live TV if you do not pay the extra R65.

I thought subscription was now R624 ?

But are the HD channels only available on the Premium package ? What if you have Dstv Compact, is it possible to access the HD channels ?

It is, R559 + R65 (R594 was pre-April increase)
HD channels are only on premium, the HD channels are part of the R559 subs and not within the R65 XV/PVR fee

With out a doubt - so you can record the good stuff and skip all the crappy adverts (normally volume blasting 10x harder than the programme you watching) and all the repeats and all the repeats and all the repeats and all the repeats e repeats and all the repeats and all the repeats and all the repeats and all the repeats .........................

It's not as simple as you make it out to be. I believe DStv pays royalties for supplying a PVR service. They also have to put content protection on the AV outputs (macrovision), so you are not supposed to be able to record to HTPC's or HDD recorders (this is obviously not very secure). Bottom line is, MC are not making these rules. It is made by the people supplying the content.

Please clarify - is it possible to get stuff off the PVR? Say to an external HDD?

It's definitely worth it. I've had it for a month and I still ask myself why I didn't purchase it earlier. If you have an HDTV the HD channels are simply superb :D
