So im seeing something funny happen with my phone, when ever i make calls and i try to brows
or chat the data cuts out?

Is this Normal? or is it just my phone?

htc one

Used to happen to me when I used to tether my nokia to the laptop. If the phone rang and I answered, my data session would sometimes close.

AFAIK edge disconnects when you make a call but 3G stays connected..?

EDGE does not support simultaneous data + call.
3G should
I think LTE doesn't even support calls, so you might well lose your LTE connection when a call comes in?

Thanx guys ... its 3g and yes i did acctually plug it in while i was on call just to charge
a bit and it seems after that it just died!!!

All GSM technologies 2G (GPRS/EDGE), 3G-WCDMA (3G/HSPA) support simultaneous data (PS) and voice connection (CS). LTE works different, as it doesn't support CS services but you don't lose data connection on LTE during voice calls either. As opposed to EvDO CDMA technology (used by Neotel so far) which do not support it.

This is about technology capabilities, individual device can be configured to limit functionality.

Its usually network related. I noticed that some devices on Cellc and 8ta when on full 3G will sometimes kick you back to 2G during the call. That could cause you to lose connection.

Also I did run some tests but when a call is active the 3G speeds gets reduced so much basically only whatsapp and bbm messages goes through. Web pages are slow to load.

Speed reduction and losing 3G completely can be attributed to battery problem. When voltage drops below certain level, device will reduce data transmition rate to maintain voice connection. Even 3G modems do this when USB cable is not supplying sufficient power.

On 8TA it happens all the time for me. The moment we get a call, the 3G drops to edge and I am unable to access any website.

Yes I have noticed it with my iphone. Full bars of 3G talking like 10sec and it gets kick back to edge for the rest of the call and switches back to 3G once the call is done.

Same thing happened on Nokia lumia 1520. Its very interesting though. I should do more tests.

Right, when more people are experiencing this problem, then there is possibility that tower kicks you out. Is the same happen in different area in good signal condition?

If you have good signal with MTN they don't kick you back to EDGE during a call.

I did a test with my iphone only so not sure how accurate the results are but for what its worth.

On a call to the callcentre and did a speedtest speed was like 500-600Kbps bursting maybe to 1Mbps and when I say maybe it almost did not even happen during the speedtest. If I end the call and do a speedtest to the same server same phone I get like 12Mbps download speed.

I did it a couple of times to verify but for my iphone at least data speeds was reduced significantly during a call. Could maybe just be a iphone thing if its not a network type restriction.

Many many times on my iphone when talking about 15 seconds or so with Telkom Mobile full bars they kick you back to EDGE. If a data connection is active or not. They will just kick you back to 2G. Cellc not so much but they do some times. I will test vodacom tomorrow to see how it works 3G in my iphone since I got my sim only contract with them now.

iPhone is out of question. Due to the ingenuity in antenna design, signal is jumping with changing the way how you hold handset. Apple was giving free silicon condom (only in US), they updated OS to cheat signal indicator and partially reduced problem by dual antenna in later models. There are codes to unlock cheat and display true dBm value. Dial *3001#12345#* to enter Field Test Mode, you will see. :)

BTW, did you know that iPhone has proximity switch? Once you bring phone to your ear, it blocks touch screen. It is probably also used to reduce radiation and helped passing SAR certification tests. :)
