A new exchange went up near me, 200 m directly infront of me.
How ca I change to this closer exchange?

You can't. It'll either be assigned to you later.
Remember, this is Telkom we're talking about...

Uhm bright blue + green box with telkom logo and a bunch of cards inside.
Went up next to the shopping centre across the road

They might cut you over to the new UMC, but it will depend on various factors. Depends on whether you are currently a foreign feed or whether your current cable has had a high fault rate.

I don't think that's an exchange, take a picture and upload it, some people will know whether it is or not.

I have the same issue. I used to live in a complex, about 1km from where I am now. I used to be connected to an exchange 2 blocks away and had perfect 4mbps internet. The house I am in now is connected to the main exchange 7km away, even though my previous exhange is 800m from my house. I had to lower my speed to 1mbps and still it only works 60% of the time.

Btw, the exchange around the corner, looks like trailer with a container on top. No more brown brick buildings it seems.

i thought an exchange is a small plain brick building without windows

Yes it is AFIK

Apparently and I quote the Telkom guy that I spoke too..

"The boxes are just where all the lines, eg (02171545..., 02171517....) come together, from there they go to the exchange." (Which is a bulding with stuff in it)

Yeah, I have the same issue. I could be getting full line speeds! But I phoned Telkom and they weren't interested in helping me. I'm half tempted just to try get a new number, asking for that exchanges number, then cancelling my old number if it works!
