Hi,

I would like to know if it is safe to have your ADSL Modem (With Wi-Fi active) sitting next to your DSTV decoder. I saw on the quick setup page from the netgear box that the modem must not be close to a cordless phone or metal surface.

thanks

@OP - some of your cordless phones work in the same frequency band as your Wifi router, so they could potentially cause interference with each other.

A metal surface can reflect the signal from the other device back to your router, meaning that your router sees the signal twice - once directly and once reflected. The can also cause problems.

Your DSTV decoder isn't an active transmitter or receiver, so it shouldn't interfere with your router or your router with it. I often put my X-treamer's Wifi dongle next to my DSTV decoder and I haven't had any problems with it yet.

Safety isn't the issue, signal quality is.

Neither safety nor signal quality should be an issue here. Unless the DSTV decoder's EMI shielding is really extremely bad, which I doubt.

Try it and see. Nothing will explode, I'm pretty confident to say: so you are safe :-)

Signal quality: Can't see how it would be a problem unless you have some very badly insulated equipment, in which case your problem is probably not the fact that the modem is next to the decoder ...

Signal quality of those routers are not good at all - forget a distance of more than 10-15 m (often even in line of sight).
