Is it still worthwhile to have a Windows laptop?

Good day.

I would like to ask a question, about Microsoft Windows.

I have a Windows 10 laptop. It has the specs to upgrade to Windows 11, so it's not of the slowest.

Resently it has become very slow. (It's like deja vu, from Windows XP en 98).

It seems that Windows becomes slower over time, I suppose because of the updates.

My question is: is it still worth the while to have a Windows computer?

Are there not better alternatives?

Is a Crome book good, or maybe connecting (is it called casting?) one's cellphone, to a computer?

What is your opinion?

Thanks.

How much RAM, what cpu, SSD?

I think it depends on what you use it for. Me personally have been using Linux Mint / Fedora for the past 18months or so without issue. I don't game and I don't use software like Photoshop. So it is very very possible. For MS office, online web versions are generally ok, even Libre office is generally ok, unless you deal with a lot of heavily macro'ed office apps its good enough in my opinion.

Good day.

Share specs of your machine. Windows 11 probably runs on 4GB RAM and 64GB HDD so that doesn't meananything.

Also, do you have SSD ?

I have a 10 year old laptop, upgraded to ssd and the ram. It runs very nicely. No performance issues.

So do you have ssd? And how much RAM?

Windows 11 is free just upgrade it.

depends what you want to use it for - if you don't use any/many Windows apps you can easily switch to Linux and give your laptop a few more good years.
Pop in a SSD and you will wonder why you ever loaded Windows in he first place.

Macbook (air or pro, depending on your mobile computing needs), iPhone, and Windows desktop. Get this combination and you can’t go wrong.

Newer OSs (Windows 7, 10, etc) shouldn't suffer much slowdown over time. There's likely an underlying issue.
A common problem with Windows 10 has to do with Memory Compression getting itself in a knot. I've found that it happens frequently with machines that only have 8GB RAM. Open task manager and go to the Performance tab and see if you can see either High CPU usage or High Disk usage during the times that the laptop is slow. These should spike occasionally, but be largely at idle (< 10%) unless you are busy running something.

If you see high usage, you can click on Open Resource Monitor at the bottom of the Performance tab. That will give you a better idea which process is causing the high usage.

If you're seeing high cpu or disk usage, you can try disabling memory compression by following these steps:

It comes down to your ability to adapt. Chrome OS is an option, but I would suggest looking into Linux. Depending on your needs, you may want to look into Ubuntu, and it runs smoothly on most modern laptops. What you can do is install Ubuntu on a flash and boot into the flash without installing the OS. Test it out and work with it a little. If it is for you, you can always install it later. That said, a lot of Windows only software will not work on Ubuntu, so make sure it can do what you need it to do first.

Didn't you leave?

1. Change to a solid state. and not all solid states are the same.
- NVME is fastest, 2nd is M.SATA and 3rd just normal sata ssd. See which yours support. Also there is a day and night difference between WD Green and a Samsung Evo (or Pro - but evo plus is pretty fast). Get one of those based on which yours support. SAMSUNG EVO PLUS OR PRO IS FASTTTTTTTTT

2. Try get 16gb of memory. Crucial has a compatibility site which shows which works, and they do work. Get crucial memory and bob's your uncle.

But SSD first then the ram.

Easiest is to install Linux on dual boot and then try and use it exclusively. If you find you hardly ever log into your windows partition you have your answer and lost no the because windows is still there if you need it.
