I am thinking of getting a Comptia A+. Is it worth getting, as I have some computer knowledge and experience but no formal qualification to apply for a job. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to which study material is the best and if its worth paying for the online courses or go for classes or will the study material be enough.

Certification is ALWAYS better than nothing!!! Regarding online course, actual classes or just study material...Thats up to you! See if you can find the CBT Nugget videos of Comptia A+, they are allways good!

Rather spend your money doing Microsoft or Cisco courses like the CCNA. If you're someone that takes the initiative - download the .PDF's or purchase the study material from Kalahari/Cisco Press/Amazon. Study your ass off at home and do practice exams here: http://www.examcollection.com then book your exam with Pearson Vue or Prometric

Though from my experience, you should also look at doing some kind of project management or business management courses. Trust me life as a techy will more than often mean that you're at the bottom of the food chain and you'll spend your life changing printer cartridges. Focus on those leadership skills and you'll be the guy driving the Ferrari.

A+ and N+ are essential fundamental certs to have before you go out and persue CCNA / MCSE / CISCO etc..

Ive gotten my A+ n+ mcsa and mcse by 20 and started working , Im 22 work full time but im busy doing CCNA and just finished doing a project management and public relations course . Don't study something and think that's all you'll need to get, find out what is needed in the field you work/ want to work in and then look what you'll need to go further then that . if you are working sacrifice time when ever you can and study to get more qualifications.

Napalm is so right with what he has said, i rate get your A+ but took at getting N+ and CCNA if your looking to go down the networking route. @ Fringe- what exactly are you looking to go into ?

Do it its easy, one of the requirement, once you have that get your N+, then move onto Cisco CCNA

Many development jobs look for a degree to hire, or a diploma in some instances. You can however, work your way up, that is what I did. Definitely a good idea to do these courses, and a software course in the area you choose to go, I went the LPI route, but you can go msce etc.

A+ and N+ is a general overview focusing on non-vendor specific IT networking.

Based on your experience, I would say it is a good idea to get it.

Hi, Youtube has a guy giving video tutorials which is extremely good. Look for Professor Messer on youtube. If you willing to use a lot of bundles.:)

If you do a national diploma in IT, A+ and N+ material is covered.

had plenty of those guys from CTI,boston ect come in, saw in 30 seconds the whole "diploma" thing fall apart on us.
if its not prometric and has a serial number its not worth the paper its written on.
ask any matric certificate guy........

Can you elaborate cause I can't understand anything you wrote.

It will be worth it, it will help you learn the basics, after doing your A+, do your N+.

The sad thing is you have to renew these Comptia certificates every 3 years :(

Yes, some companies will never employ you if you don't hold a Prometric (CompTIA) certificate.
