I might get shot but if I knew 4 years ago what I know now I would have not have written comptia A+ and N+ exams, they really hold little value. If you really want to I would say search for the material on the internet and go through it to get the knowledge but don't waste time going writing the exams, after going through the study material move onto MCSA 2012 and CCENT/CCNA.
Even if you go down the microsoft or linux route I would recommend you also get you CCNA or visa verse if you interested in networking also get you MCSA. CCNA really helps you have a better basic understanding networking and will help know when troubleshooting connectivity issues on server and how certain services work like DHCP, DNS etc.
I come from server side did my MCSA 2008 and than went over to networking, got my CCNA beginning of the year. I only focus on networks but having server knowledge have really helped me with my work a lot as it has helped me with troubleshooting, knowing whether it is a server or network related problem.
