Is it worth it?

and what exactly will it be powering?

Nothing heavy, busy building a media centre....1.5TB HDD, 4G ram, 512M GPU mabybe 1G and the standard.
 
I'd much rather spend R800 on a Corsair PSU and be backed by a 5 year warranty and quality components (Corsair = Seasonic = WIN) than go for a cheapie. So no, not worth it.
 
No no and no! I would not trust it at that price. Remember, a bad PSU can easily fry all the other components its attached to, and it happens often. Always always get a decent PSU
 
Other consideration is that being an HTPC, you'll soon enough be adding more HDDs :)
 
A 450W PSU for R199 from IC?
Imagine how much it actually cost after IC's markup? :D (ignore that excellent deal on the Logitech dinovo keyboard)

Where in the store did you find it? I've yet to see a PSU in an IC store being sold separately.
 
Another considerating is that many generics have a bloody loud fan on them. That's something you definitely do not want on an HTPC.

it is available in their latest sale pamplet. Was sceptical when i seen the ad, that is the reason for the thread.

And BTW, you're building an HTPC so Corsair's V range was specifically built to be QUIET so if you're willing to shell out a couple hundred bucks more, the VX450W will be your answer. I've got one and it's dead silent and I don't have to worry since 5 year warranty.
