Is it worth it?

I'm looking at the idea of getting Wireless. I would just like to know, before I make a decision, whether it is worth it. Would you suggest Sentech?

I cancelled mine yesterday. When it works, it works great. But for the majoitiy of the time, it doesn't.

Now that they're capping users, its just another reason to go elsewhere.

Thanx. Because I don't want to sometimes hav access and sometimes not. Then, in all honesty, I'll pay a more and get adsl.

Yes, thats obvious. ADSL is far more stable though. Whats the point of a 20GB cap if the service is **** for 2 weeks every month?

the moment i can get adsl i will scrap sentech. its good only at night most of the subscribers are logged off. Then, MAYBE i get 50k.
During the day i get about 7k international. Go for ADSL.

I've probably had a combined downtime of about 5 days in the more than 1 year I've had MyWireless.

I find it to be extremely stable and very consistent. I've lived/used it in 3 different locations (two different towers though) in that time. Maybe I just got lucky?

I'm glad I got it though, because the much larger cap is what I want it for (20GB).

I use MyWireless at my business and last month was pretty bad with quite a bit of email hassles. However, before that and since late October, I had months of stable service. If your signal is decent, you will find the service to be perfectly acceptable. It will fall over from time to time but then again so does ADSL. And you won't wait weeks for the connection to be established. But as a general rule if STABILITY is what you are looking for ADSL is ahead of all the wireless solutions. If CAP is what you are looking for go for MyWireless. If PORTABILITY all over SA is what you are looking for, go for 3G. And if SANITY is what you are looking for go to the UK. :-)

Connection: nicely said. Especially the "And if SANITY is what you are looking for go to the UK" part. :D

Very well said. Having both ADSL & MyWireless, I must say that I'm happy with MyWireless. Yes it is slow at times but my ADSL slows to a crawl at times too. There are so many stages in an internet connection that its not always the last stage thats the slowest. When MyWireless slows down I go away and put the kettle on and use it as an excuse to get up and stretch my legs!:)

The reliability though, as in last night/ this morning... (just after midnight) Ok I know most people are asleep, but I was downloading a trial transcription file from a potentially lucrative Australian client, when boom , out of the blue nada, nothing, zip.... just totally lost my connection. The message telling me that they could not log me in as my user name and/or password did not exist on the network!!! So who are you going to call at that time of night to sort things out. So I just packed up and went to bed , and this morning apologised to the client. But it is embarassing and really really frustrating

I have had MyWireless for over a year now - downtime over all that time, maybe 5 full days. Performance - very erratic; but it all depends on what you want to do. I use it for international online trading, which communicates an average of 4KBps, and is very sensitive to disconnection. Yes, I get frustrated at times, but overall it works really well, especially as I cannot afford to run into capping problems in the middle of a trade.

Had ADSL for 1 month now as well - downtime in that time, maybe 1 full day. Maybe I just got connected in a bad patch. Performance - of course, cannot compare the two.

Look, I know it's not ideal, but if your internet connection is mission-critical, you CANNOT rely on just one provider. Sentech is fine for home use, but if it's really really important, you better make sure you have another plan, just in case.

For example, I use MyWireless 128k (question: any evidence that 256k is any faster?), but if it fails, I've got my cellphone as a backup. GPRS is all good, but I happen to have a 3G phone. And if that fails, I guess I'll go knock on the neighbour's door to use the landline. No, not really, I'll rather climb the pole and hook it up, cos I don't know my neighbours...

Anyway, my point is that I have a backup plan, 'cos Sentech is not exactly Mil-Spec... ["not for use in medical equipment :) "]

I had 128k for about 4 months before upgrading to the 256k package which I've been on now for about 11 months. Browsing speed is slightly faster on the 256k package, but downloading big files (FTP, HTTP, BitTorrent etc) on the 256k package is definitely twice as fast. And you get twice the cap.

Agree with UN here. Single threads not much diff, but anything multi-threaded performs close to package limit. Single thread performance can be seen in the tcpiq link in my sig :)...and that 20GB soft cap is not too shabby either
